2. it flickers on the mint 17.1 'cinamon' installation disk - but it is stable on mint 17.0 'mate' installed

3. i can cure it by accesing the 'recovery section' of the 'multi-boot' system: but it is NOT 'persistent'

4. how can i fix this, using the 'cli': to make the fix 'permanent'

the laptop is an older 'toshiba - amd - athlon x2'

correction: laptop is toshiba satelite A215-S4697 AMD Turion x2 1024MB SDRAM

further:

1. installed mint 17.1: same results - flickers on live dvd as well as installed
2. re-installed (k)ubuntu 14.04: systems did not flicker
3. updated (k)ubuntu 14.04 to (k)ubuntu 14.04.1: systems returned to flicker
4. 14.04 uses kernel 13.0.24; and 14.04.1 uses kernel 13.0.43

solutions:

1. ask ubuntu to correct in future kernels, or
2. send me a solution for future use of distros using kernel 13.0.43, so that i can fix

hansie, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xorg 1405277

Please ensure you have xdiagnose installed, and that you click the Yes button for attaching additional debugging information.

As well, given the information from the prior release is already available, testing a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.

I have the exact same problem as hansie describes. I am trying to put Trusty (14.04 LTS, 32 bit version) on a Toshiba Satellite A215-S4697 with an AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core processor, 1024 DDR2 SDRAM--same laptop as hansie. There is no flickering/blinking on the original download of Trusty with Linux 3.13.0-32. The flickering/blinking started, when I did my first update to Linux 3.13.0-48. I did a further update to Linux 3.13.0-49 and the problem continued.
So at least 2 people have this problem and I am pretty sure that any other Toshiba Satellite A215-S4697 user has the same problem. I see the problem is labelled as low priority. To me it is not low priority, because I would like to have a long term support (LTS) os on my computer. However, if the problem is fixed in 15.04 (as hansie states), I guess I could go with that until the next LTS.

Has anybody tried the 64 bit version of 14.04??? Are people moving on to 15.04, so this problem is likely never to be fixed in 14.04 LTS???

Based on hansie's research, finding that linux kernel 3.19 did not flicker/blink, I installed kernel 3.19 into Ubuntu 14.04. I followed the instructions at these sites: http://www.linuxbsdos.com/2014/12/06/how-to-upgrade-ubuntu-14-10-kernel-to-version-3-17-1/ and http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2015/02/upgrade-linux-kernel-3-19-ubuntu-14-04/ The flickering ceased and so far everything has run fine. So at this point I consider the Ubuntu 14.04 problem solved. However, there may still be problems with 14.10 or other distributions like Xubuntu, etc. I intend to install Xubuntu on that same computer within the next week, so that will be a further test on the kernel 3.19 fix. I recommend that you leave the bug open for a little while and if you hear nothing more, consider kernel 3.19 as the fix.
It would be nice if something about this problem could be included in installation notes for 14.04 and 14.10, if this is possible.
