Scrolling takes 18 seconds holding down arrow key at 180% zoom

Bug Description

At 180% zoom (almost full width), with the attached document I count about 18 seconds to scroll from first to second page by holding the arrow-down key.

At 180% zoom, a two-pages text-only document takes less than 2 seconds to scroll from first to second page by holding the arrow-down key.

It becomes faster (not much) when the same image covers a smaller area.

From settings, I've tried to maximize the graphics memory, and to enable/disable hardware acceleration and antialiasing, but it doesn't help.

The problem persists in LibreOffice 4.3.5-rc2 from ubuntu PPA.

That problem was introduced with LO 4.0. Older versions work more than ten times faster when scrolling images. The bug is independent from the image type (jpg, tiff, gif, ...), color depth or the program the image was created with. It was reported many times by different users and every time the report was closed without solving the problem. The solution I use is to work with Apache OpenOffice 4.1, which works as fast as expected and shows that it is no problem of slow hardware or image cache settings.

robegue, in order to define the scope of this, could you please provide precise detail when you say "very slow"?

For example, how much slower is it in scrolling seconds per page, etc.

when I say very slow I mean several seconds to scroll one page. But as I said, the slowiness depends on the size of the image.

robegue, regarding the attached document, the scroll speed at the same zoom level is exactly the same for me with either Word 2013 on Windows 10 or Ubuntu Wily Writer.

Hence, could you please advise if the one of the PPAs with 5.x shows an improvement via https://launchpad.net/~libreoffice ?

1) How many seconds precisely with the reference document on average?
2) What zoom type/% are you using?
3) Any further dependency to other programs running?

robegue, to clarify, if you remove the following non-default kernel parameters does this change anything:
intel_pstate=enable pcie_aspm=force i915.enable_rc6=0 i915.lvds_downclock=0 i915.enable_fbc=0 i915.semaphores=1

robegue, I'm not convinced we have an actionable issue here that needs to be addressed via scheduling resource now. This is how to have a few seconds in scrolling the attached picture is expected here.

Also, it matches the speed with which Office does the scrolling.

Hence, for now, this is a Won't Fix Wishlist request, focused only on the attached document, pertaining to the underlying algorithms regarding image presentation to be faster, more efficient, etc. which will be addressed over time upstream.

If more information is presented that provides a materially new insight, then this is a different matter, and the Status may be reconsidered.

Despite this, the discussion may still continue regarding this issue.

Thank you for submitting this report, and working together with me on this.

Well, if you think that 18 seconds to scroll a page is normal, you could have closed this earlier without making me flashing bios and installing software. I'm sure there's something wrong in this terrible scrolling lag, not expected even on a cellphone nowadays...

The report summary notes precisely the scope here:
Scrolling takes 5 seconds holding down arrow key at 100% zoom

>", you could have closed..."

This report isn't closed. If it were, then this discussion wouldn't be occurring. However, as previously mentioned, nobody is actively looking into this to pursue a fix.

>"..this earlier without making me flashing bios and installing software."

We ensured that your environment wasn't materially different in a way that causes the results for me to be different from you.

>"I'm sure there's something wrong in this terrible scrolling lag, not expected even on a cellphone nowadays..."

I'm not saying it's pleasant, but what I've been able to reproduce as previously advised is how it's the exact same as Office (which is the bar from a performance compatibility expectation perspective). Present some evidence as to the counter, and we may take it from there.
