Bug Description

Binary package hint: kopete

In kubuntu gutsy, kopete seems to slow to a crawl when drawing the chat window. This happens when a new conversation starts, as well as switching tabs within the chat window. I'm noticing sometimes up to 10 seconds just to redraw the window.

I've tried using different themes, thinking imported adium themes might be the culprit, but even the standard, packaged themes have the same problem.

Not sure where to start troubleshooting.

Just an update. I've removed all preferences for kopete from ~/.kde and started with a fresh set. The problem still persists, leading me to believe it's not a kopete bug. Other than that, I'm not sure where to look. It only affects kopete.

I've been finding that kopete slows to a crawl when the webcam preferences are open. I believe that this is due to the way it deals with a bug in the gspca driver. I'm about to file a bug report about it. I suspect that your problem may have nothing to do with this, but I mention it just in case.

That also happens with me.

Not only it sometimes takes 10 seconds to redraw the window but also takes the same 10 seconds to send a message.

Very annoying.

I've done a fresh install of kubuntu hardy on a new computer. After setting it up for my accounts (2 yahoo and 2 aim) it shows the same behavior. Every time I receive a new IM, the whole application freezes temporarily for about 10-20 seconds. The systray icon disappears and the window darkens. Then the new IM pops up and everything is back to normal. Again, kopete is the only app that has this problem.

by the way, the same behavior is shown when closing a contact tab in the chat window.

Is this symptom still reproducible in 8.10 RC or later?

Yes, it is still present. I started with a fresh install (no kde folder) of Kubuntu 8.10. I have one AIM and one Yahoo account. I thought by reducing my accounts from four to two, it might help matters. It hasn't.

When I click on a contact to initiate a conversation, the whole app freezes for 10-20 seconds, then the chat window pops up and everything is fine.

If another contact sends me a new message (or if I click to open a conversation with another contact) the chat window freezes again for 10-20 seconds, usually with half of what I was typing being sent to the new tab when it finally opens. ;)

Would you happen to have a webcam attached somehow to your computer? It could be this bug: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=167011

I'm afraid not. I gave up on webcams a long time ago. I can't believe it's only affecting me, with a couple fresh installs and a new .kde directory under my belt.

I even pared down my accounts to two (one yahoo and one aim) thinking it might be a problem with having two of each at the same time. Still the same problem.

I also wondered if it could be the nvidia drivers, as many context menus and plasmoids are slow with compositing on. But this was going on in KDE3 as well, when I didn't have a compositor installed.

Is this still a problem in Jaunty? There may be a fix that may be able to be backported. Thank you.

I haven't noticed this in a fresh installation of jaunty.
