Bug Description

Binary package hint: xmms

Gutsys repositories seem to be missing the Flac plugin for XMMS. Hence, XMMS cannot play Flac audio.

I confirm this problem.

And it is a real problem - XMMS is the only player that can sensibly handle my music collection. Audacious crashes if you try to add tens of thousands of tracks and the database apps (Rhythmbox, Banshee, Amarok etc.) just never finish "updating" when you point them at 30.000+ tracks.

Can we please have XMMS-FLAC?

As a workaround I took libflac7 and xmms-flac both from feisty's repository and installed them in gutsy.
This works for me, but this is not very user-friendly, notably to users new to linux.

Aha! You're right, this is a dirty hack, but if it works... So you need to take libflac7 from feisty *instead* of libflac8 (from gutsy repos)? Is that all, or does one encounter further dependency issues? Thx for the tip :)

At present gutsy’s libflac8 and feisty’s libflac7 are installed in my gutsy-setup.
libflac8 was probably installed experimentalising mit xmms2-plugin-flac, but this plugin do not seem to be compatible mit xmms.

The dependecies of feisty’s xmms-flac explicitly need libflac7 which is not included in gutsy. Fortunately feisty’s libflac7 and gutsy’s libflac8 do not conflict with each other on my system. The other dependencies of feisty’s xmms-flac are satisfied by gutsy.

Well, I won't name it a dirty hack, but it urges the request on a gutsy-native xmms-flac, of course!

I found another solution (the most obvious one lol)...Compile the XMMS plugin from source.

You need to first install "xmms-dev" package from Gutsy repos, as well as the basic "flac" package. Then surf on to Flac homepage at http://flac.sourceforge.net/ and grab the source tarball (I suppose its best to have the same version as the installed Flac of Gutsy, I used the 1.2.1 version source).

Extract it, open in terminal, run "./configure" and "make" after that. Then go to directory "flac-1.2.1/src/plugin_xmms/.libs" and copy the file "libxmms-flac.so" into XMMS's plugin folder (in your home folder, .xmms/plugins) and now you should have working FLAC in XMMS.

install prevu

add to the debian/control file
xmms-dev to the build deps

Description: Free Lossless Audio Codec - XMMS and Beep input plugin
FLAC stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec. Grossly oversimplified, FLAC is
similar to MP3, but lossless. The FLAC project consists of:
 .
  * The stream format
  * libFLAC, which implements a reference encoder, stream decoder, and file
    decoder
  * flac, which is a command-line wrapper around libFLAC to encode and decode
    .flac files
  * Input plugins for various music players (Winamp, XMMS, and more in the
    works)
 .
This package contains an XMMS input plugin to play FLAC audio streams. It also
provides symlinks for it to work with Beep Media Player, since plugins between
 the two players are interchangeable.

at the end of the file
and run prevu in that dir
then install the resulting pakcage

Youre saying its still unfixed in Hardy?
I havent been able to get my XMMS to play any FLACs now on my 64-bit system..Even tried installing the plugin from Feistys repos, no cigar.
Luckily Audacious works...

Triaged to Confirmed. If we can get an XMMS-goom plug in, surely we can get a FLAC plug in. What's keeping this from being added to the repositories?

Just a little question here... Which basic flac package are you refering to MrAuer? I presume its the lib8 guy? I installed the xmms-dev package and compiled from source and added to .xmms/plugin but still no go so i reread and realised i had missed the basic flac package bit... Thanks for the fix though xmms rocks I had all but given up listening to music on this old horse of a laptop but with xmms its party time. rtorrent is helping along too, rebuilding my library :-)

alright. Got it working. Thanks for the fix. Just one more question. Is there a point in doing make install for flac if im just going to use xmms for flac files?

MrAuer (mr-auer) wrote :

If I remember correctly, make install flac wasnt necessary. I think make - then copy the flac plugin for xmms from the build directory to xmms plugins dir was enough.
Ive moved to Audacious since xmms is still missing the plugin and Audacious is working pretty well for me now.

a real shame - i have just been through it all: Amarok (with and without
MySQL), Rhythmbox, Audacious, Exaile, MPD (with Gimmix, Sonata etc.) and
Banshee - and NONE of them, except Audacious, can handle my 35-40k
collection (they just stall/freeze), and Audacious is not too happy and
often stops or refuses to play tracks - NEVER had any such problems with
XMMS,

waiting for a proper replacement!

So here we are in Intrepid, and one has to be just that: intrepid to get XMMS playing in the Ibex, but it can be done, but sends you in dependency hell. A wild goose chase through libraries.
