Amapele, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. As per http://download.lenovo.com/express/ddfm.html an update to your BIOS is available (3.12). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it change anything? If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette .

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. As well, you don't have to create a new bug report.

Once the BIOS is updated, then please mark this report Status Confirmed.

Thank you for your understanding.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.18 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Christopher, your first link is unreachable. http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/63af08us.txt has a good description of the BIOS versions, but I was unable to find a suitable non Windows installer, which was confirmed by the Lenovo forums. I do not have Windows. At least one person with my specific PC type (0768-A52) started having USB device problems after upgrading, which makes me reluctant to do so even if I could find a stand alone installer.

Joseph, I discovered the kernel version I was running was 3.2.0-23-generic-pae, which is for 64 bit i386. I fixed my boot menu to use 3.2.0-70-generic-pae, which is 32 bit, and successfully duplicated the problem. After I installed the latest upstream kernel, the "Freezing of tasks" message disappeared and the PC powered down. Unfortunately, the system did not resume from swap at the next power up.
