Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

When loading firefox, instead of a familiar firefox interface all I get is a yellow window saying:

<window id="main-window"
^ <menuitem id="menu_HelpPopup_reportertoolmenu"
----^ <menuitem id="menu_HelpPopup_reportPhishingtoolmenu"
----^ <menu id="helpMenu"
----^

Now, I thought this is the typical corrupt firefox profile thingy, as I upgraded from Feisty (although with a clean installation, but with an untouched /home partition). So I moved .mozilla out of the way and guess what... still happens!!!

Now, I restored my firefox profile and tried to run a binary distribution of firefox that I got from getfirefox.com... and it works just fine.

So there is something fishy going on about gutsy's firefox.

Console error message (that not always appears):
[Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE) [nsIStringBundle.GetStringFromName]" nsresult: "0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE)" location: "JS frame :: file:///usr/lib/firefox/components/nsSessionStartup.js :: sss_doRecoverSession :: line 281" data: no]

Installed stuff:
* Kubuntu Gutsy updated as of this morning (although it happened right from the start, a week ago).
* Firefox package Version: 2.0.0.6+2-0ubuntu3

Ok, I read this article that gave me an idea:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mozilla-firefox-locale-all/+bug/27244

So I uninstalled mozilla-firefox-locale-es-es and, presto! Firefox works again.

Cannot be the same bug, that one is 2 years old and in the meantime Feisty etc have been around with a fully working Firefox.

Funny thing is, it is working now, but my firefox is still in spanish...

So there is something weird along those lines, and I bet it also happens in other languages as well... So pretty much everyone using Firefox in a language not english will be affected...

I don't think this is a Firefox issue.
I'm using Kubuntu Gutsy and Firefox (localized in French) and I didn't have this problem. Usually this kind of bug in Firefox is due to incompatible add-ons. You should try to launch Firefox with the command line :

firefox -safe-mode

It will disable all add-ons. If it works, try to uninstall each add-on, one by one to find the faulty one.

Changed in firefox:
status: New → Incomplete

But bruno, this happens when I move my ~/.mozilla out of the way, so Firefox
creates an empty one - it cannot be any addons.

I tried -safe-mode and made no difference.

I also think there is something fishy going on with the language extensions to Firefox supplied by Ubuntu. After installing Turkish and Bulgarian language support, I can no longer install any add-ons from the mozilla site. The extension manager simply refuses to install them. Very frustrating...
