Did this issue occur in a previous version of Ubuntu, or is this a new issue?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.18 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I tested the latest upstream kernel but the computer does not boot anymore.

As well, would 3.18-rc1 provide a testable environment?

Christopher, here are some results from live medium without any update,
i.e., as it comes with the live CD:
- 12.04.5 => same problem as above
- 13.04 and 13.10 => don't boot (seems to crash when graphic card is
called, but I'm no specialist)
- 14.04 and 14.10 => same as 12.04.5 and as described above.

I built kernel 3.18rc1 to compare to 3.18rc2. This time it boots but
trackpad / touchpad problem is still the same: no pointer, no effect of
clicks.

Just to be sure everything is done correctly (that's the first time I
report a bug...), here is what prints to screen when sudo dpkg -i *.deb
Could you please check everything is fine (see parts in bold)?

Maximilien Levesque, 12.04.5 is not considered a previous release for the purposes of testing this bug as it has the same linux kernel (package that is the cause of this problem) as Trusty. Discussing releases that don't boot is not helpful in troubleshooting this issue.

Despite this, could you please test 12.04.0 (3.2.x kernel) via http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/12.04.0/ and advise to the results?
