Slow framerate with latest nvidia drivers using Gutsy and XFX 8600gt

Bug Description

Using Gutsy or Feisty with the latest nvidia drivers available (installing using restricted drivers wizard) is really slow.

My previous card was a 6600 GT (wich I am using now) and worked perfectly. Now with the new card, everything works much slower. Direct rendering is enabled, and the nvidia driver is loaded acording to xorg.conf. One odd behaviour I noticed is that when I launch glxgears the system freezes and the login screen is displayed again. Another issue I noticed is that when using this card, I can't set my lcd monitor (samsung 971p) properly. Only 50hz and 54hz refresh rate is available. With the 6600gt I can set 60hz or 75hz wich is the recommended setting.

Tried with manual driver install, envy, restricted drivers. Everything with the same results when using 8600 gt.... really slow.

I had to install my previous card (6600gt) in order to keep using ubuntu, I hope we can sort this out so I can use my new card wich is now collecting dust :)

The hz isn't actually related to the speed of your card at all (it's just the refresh rate of your screen). Further the "incorrect" reporting of it is Bug #92599 (also see the troubleshooting section of https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia ).

The first question is what is the output of
dpkg -l \*nvidia\* | grep ii
dpkg -l \*xgl\* | grep ii
?

There is not really enough information in this bug to diagnose the problem at this stage. Please can you attach your
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
file along with the dmesg.txt file produced by running
dmesg > dmesg.txt
while X is running slowly?

Hi, at the moment I have the old card installed with feisty. I will install the 8600gt and get back to you. To fix the refresh rate problem I have disabled DynamicTwinView and now it is working at 75hz but the desktop is still not very responsive when using nvidia graphic driver.

To reproduce the problem I will:

1- Install gutsy from latest image available
2- Enable universe and multiverse repos to download nidia driver
3- Download and enable nvidia-glx-new
4- Getting the logs you mentioned and uploading them here :)

Thanks, will get back soon (after I install gutsy and the new card)

This was taken from a clean gutsy install, only added the restricted driver. Still the same issue, even when I minimize a window I can see it going down sloowly. No desktop effects are enabled.

and here is the xorg log file

Is performance (for 2D things) any better if you use the nv driver?

(Back on the nvidia driver)
What is the output of
cat /proc/cpuinfo
?

Does disabling desktop effects in System -> Preferences -> Appearance make any difference?

Hi Sitsofe,

Yes, the 2D performance is better with the NV driver. I have been using the desktop now without desktop effects (they were disabled completely).

Once I enabled them, the system feels much more responsive, so I guess is a bug in nvidia drivers when using only 2D. When it was on 2D mode if i tried to move a totem window that was playing a video, the video would freeze until I finished moving the window. Now with desktop effects enabled, this does not happen.

Will get back to you with the cpuinfo. Thanks!

Just an idea, but perhaps it has something to do with the kernel?
