Bug Description

I updated from Stellarium 0.12.4 to 0.13.1 on Xubuntu 14.04 (64bit), now no objects (stars, planets etc.) are being displayed anymore (see attached screenshot); even with a fresh profile. I can still (blindly) click on objects and get the corresponding information displayed though.

Since I skipped Stellarium 0.13.0 I don't know if the problem is new to 0.13.1 or existed already in 0.13.0. The binaries which I installed are from https://launchpad.net/~stellarium/+archive/ubuntu/stellarium-releases or more accurately:

stellarium_0.13.1-1ubuntu1~ppa2~ubuntu14.04.1_amd64.deb
stellarium-data_0.13.1-1ubuntu1~ppa2~ubuntu14.04.1_all.deb

It may be graphics related, so here is more about my graphics device:

$ glxinfo | grep OpenGL
OpenGL vendor string: X.Org
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on AMD TURKS
OpenGL core profile version string: 3.3 (Core Profile) Mesa 10.1.3
OpenGL core profile shading language version string: 3.30
OpenGL core profile context flags: (none)
OpenGL core profile profile mask: core profile
OpenGL core profile extensions:
OpenGL version string: 3.0 Mesa 10.1.3
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.30
OpenGL context flags: (none)
OpenGL extensions:

I also have not just pressed the "S" key by accident. By pressing "S" I can still toggle whether the names of the brighter stars get displayed, but in neither state I get to see the stars (or planets or anything other except some DSOs).

I found out the issue occurs in 0.13.0 already. Could it be related to the switch to Qt5 and maybe some issue with missing libraries or some older libraries which are causing conflicts?

Hm. Let's excludes potential graphics issue - can you install proprietary driver and check the sky again?

The problem is that this is my production system and I can't afford breaking anything that makes the system unusable.

Is there a debug version of Stellarium which may provide more clues what exactly it is that prevents rendering the objects? I think I remember seeing something of a Linux debug version of Stellarium; maybe we can use this for investigating further?!

Oh! Sorry for stupid proposal.

OK. Can you on the first stage get debug info for the OpenGL features? E.g. via CLI: stellarium --dump-opengl-details

BTW, I do have another system, also with Xubuntu 14.04 (64bit) and Stellarium 0.13.1 works fine there. The other system uses an NVIDIA compatible graphics device. This increases my suspicion that the problem is very much related to the graphics device which I use on my main/production system.

Also, text on main screen (object details, popup hints, etc) looks ugly. In old version (12.4) it was thin and smooth, but now letters looks rough and truncated at upper row.

Can one - or better - all of the affected users please try and update Mesa to something later than version 10.1.3? We have one report where on FreeBSD an update from Mesa 9.1.7 to xorg 1.14 and Mesa 10.3.1 solved the missing star issue. Please report back if Mesa 10.3.1 is the solution.

Thanks for the updates, Georg and Dean.

As I said earlier, with the issue occurring on my production system I don't want to risk updating right now. But I plan to update to Xubuntu 15.04 in April, and if indeed Mesa 10.3 fixes this problem, my path to the latest Stellarium version should be free again.

Until then I'll stick with 0.12.4 on this one system.

Hi,

I have the same problem - after updating to 0.13.2 no more stars.
I would like to reinstall 0.12.4, but have no clue how to do it. I've been looking everywhere for an older version, no luck.
can anyone help me?
I'm not very fit in linux, so all that mesa etc. is chinese to me....

I'm on Ubuntu 64bit, 14.04.1.

Greetings

Hi!

There are two options to solve the problem with missing stars in Stellarium
0.13.x

The first is rollback to old version of Stellarium (0.12.4)
Howto: http://www.howtogeek.com/117929/how-to-downgrade-packages-on-ubuntu/

Another one - update your system graphic libs (Mesa) from this source:
https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/ubuntu/graphics-drivers
How to add repository:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Ubuntu#Third-Party_Software_Tab

I hope this will help.

Upgrading to Xubuntu 15.04 (which included an update to Mesa 10.5) solved the problem. Stars show up fine with Stellarium 0.13.3 now.
