I'm also experiencing this bug, with exactly the same graphics card and symptoms (random unrecoverable black screen upon opening certain websites in Firefox or Chrome). First noticed when attempting to open http://www.google.com/chrome through Firefox also.

This happens on my Dell Latitude D630 very frequently after my Mint 17 upgrade. Sometimes, right when the screen goes black, I can close the lid and it will go to sleep, when I open the lid again, it wakes up and the display works again; otherwise, recovery isn't possible. (I haven't tried any clever recovery steps via SSH, because I don't know what those might be.)

I managed to catch the problem in logs, as well through the successful sleep/wakeup workaround.

Hopefully, these logs can shed some light for someone who knows how to interpret them.

This is an issue in the intel graphic drivers.
I created the following ticket at maintainers bug tracker: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=85406
Hopefully Linux mint/ubuntu intergrate the fix with it's fixed.

I have the same problem with the exact same Intel graphics driver:

Adding a ME TO:

lspci | grep -i vga
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (primary) (rev 0c)

uname -a
Linux LENOVO 3.13.0-37-generic #64-Ubuntu SMP Mon Sep 22 21:28:38 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Easy to reproduce and seems to be happening more frequently. Never had a issue until the last few version upgrades of Mint. My computer is an old and very reliable Lenovo R60 running MINT

Adding some additional log info:

This one is chrome://gpu

Can't tell if the reason this is important that the problem is with recent Chrome changes that are expecting certain behaviors from the driver that then crashes
