Bug Description

Fresh install of

edubuntu 14.04 LTS on a
laptop Dell latitude E6400;

rather than allowing the user to log back in, the laptop crashes after closing and opening the lid. Shows a login screen as if the computer is locked, but the keyboard does not respond. Mouse pad allows movement of the cursor, but clicking on icons to try to shut down properly does not work. Must use power button to perform a hard reboot. Thus far has been a problem on two of these laptops with the same edubuntu install.

WORKAROUND: Use Gnome Fallback instead of Unity.

Kristen French, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from the very top line at the top of the page (not the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested exactly shown as:
kernel-fixed-upstream-3.17-rc3

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

I can confirm that putting the laptop into suspend using the pull down menu (rather than closing the lid) also causes the same crash behavior.

more behavior information:

giving suspend a longer time to recover results in:
1) login screen briefly is replaced by a page of script--about a second, so there is no time to read any of it; one time this was about 4 lines, another time it was a full screen of text lines, another time there appeared to be spaced lines between text lines;
2) returns to login screen, plays its little drum cadence; now the Wi-Fi is active and connected.
3) now I can interact; I can enter my password;
4) login prompt goes away, but the system does not come up--now the computer freezes again, and I have to do a hard reboot.

After rebooting, sometimes it will tell me that there has been a problem detected, and it will allow me to submit an error/incident report. I am not certain these are going through. The interaction with apport repeats through the questions about allowing all information to be reported and asking whether I am willing to help with debugging.

Mainline kernel install did not fix the problem. Perhaps it made it worse.

please excuse errors...my first time attempting this reporting.

recover from suspend resulted in no graphics interface at all. A long list of information (several pages) flew by, Froze after "end of trace" I believe.

after hard reset "System program problem detected"; then "Sorry, Ubuntu 14.04 has experienced an internal error." Noted that there was an upstream kernel installed and advised that I report the bug through kernel bug tracker. I have not done so.

Okay, I found that folder using the URL above, but what file(s) do I use to
test the kernel?

Kristen French, consulting https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds if one is using amd64, which your Bug Description advises you do, one would install all the _amd64.deb files, and the _all.deb.

kernel-fixed-upstream-3.17-rc4-lowlatency (current version installed for testing, confirmed by uname -a)

Bug appears to be fixed. Recovery from suspend is working correctly and quickly, whether initiated by the pull-down menu or by closing the lid.

Thank you for your patience through this process.

Do I retain this kernel on my machine, or do I need to obtain a newer Edubuntu for a reinstall?

Kristen French, the upstream kernel is not supported as per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds#Does_the_kernel_team_support_the_mainline_kernel_builds.3F .

Hence, you are welcome to test Utopic via http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ and if the issue is not reproducible, use it going forward.

Otherwise, the next step is to perform a full reverse commit bisection of the kernel in order to identify the fix commit following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection#How_do_I_reverse_bisect_the_upstream_kernel.3F .

I think I can do this...it will probably take a few days, as there is a lot
going on right now. But if it will help, I would like to try.

I have narrowed down the fix to somewhere between 3.16.0-0316 and 3.17.0.0317-rc1.

With 3.17.0.0317-rc1:
manual suspend recovers properly
closing lid suspend recovers properly
laptop does not crash when docking

The latest testing I have done is to reinstall Edubuntu:

DistroRelease: Ubuntu 14.04
Package: linux-image-3.13.0-32-generic 3.13.0-32.57 [modified: boot/vmlinuz-3.13.0-32-generic]

Then, instead of using the default GUI, Unity, I installed the Gnome Fallback which comes with the package.

Use of Gnome Fallback eliminates the suspend issues I am having with these laptops. Therefore, I believe that the bug is not within Ubuntu 3.13 per se, but within Unity.

I hope this is helpful.

Kristen French, the issue with using Unity would still be a kernel one if you use a later kernel version and it fixes the issue while using Unity.

However, if you intend on using Gnome Fallback going forward, please feel free to mark this Status Invalid. Otherwise, this would be pending https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1366432/comments/14 .

I can't use a later kernel version, because none of the kernels that fix the problem are part of the LTS Trusty Tahr release. I think this bug is still valid, and needs to be resolved in a LTS update. However, I'm not sure that I can do anything about that at this time.
