The ia32-libs package for gutsy amd64 doesn't include libxdamage.

This prevents google earth from running.

What confuses me is why this used to work; was it only pre-gutsy, has feisty's actually got this library and we lost in gutsy?

I can't reproduce this.

andy@andy-desktop:~$ ldd ./google-earth/googleearth-bin |grep -i damage

My google earth binary does not need damage. Additionally, it runs flawless from the start.

Linux andy-desktop 2.6.22-10-generic #1 SMP Wed Aug 22 07:42:05 GMT 2007 x86_64 GNU/Linux

AMD64 and NVIDIA proprietary 3D drivers.

Not everyones googleearth binaries seem to depend on libXdamage; but both of ours do and I've just tried dropping libXdamage in and it fixes it for me.

OK, it looks like it is the libGLU that is pulling this in, so if you are using proprietary drivers you don't see this.

I am using the Intel laptop graphics chipset 965 specifically bought because of open source drivers :-)

I had the same problem earlier today. Getting libXdamage from the i386 package solved the problem.
I have Intel GM965 graphics, so no proprietary drivers.
Gutsy tribe5 AMD64, daily updated.

ia32-libs (2.1ubuntu1) gutsy; urgency=low

  * Re-add ia64 support, broken by the last debian merge:
    - Replace references from gcc-4.1-base to gcc-4.2-base.
    - Fix broken ld-linux.so.2 symlink (LP: #137927).
    - /etc/ld.so.conf.d/ia32-libs.conf: Add /lib32 and /usr/lib32
      to the ld search path.
  * Freshen packages for gutsy.
  * Added packages: gcc-4.2-base, libaio1 (#436445), libdb4.6,
    libxdamage1 (LP: #136624).
  * Removed packages: gcc-4.1-base.
  * Add libcupsimage2, libcupsys2, libcomerr2, libkeyutils1,
    libkrb53 (LP: #122816).
  * Add locale symlink (LP: #126044).
  * Readd dctrl-tools as "build dependency", needed by fetch-and-build.
  * Merge with Debian; remaining changes:
    - Conflicts/Replaces with other ia32-libs-* packages.
    - Inclusion of ia32-libs-gtk packages.
    - debian/rules (copyright): Generation of debian/copyright.
    - debian/rules (make-orig): Build .orig tarball.
  * Update maintainer address.
