Bug Description

For a couple of days my 14.10 desktop has been broken. It's got an nvidia GeForce GTX 460 and was working up until I got some updates. Now I get a broken display with wrong resolution and no 3d acceleration, so I can't login, making the machine unusable.

Here's my xorg.0.log: http://paste.ubuntu.com/8197542/

I was able to get a tiny bit further by making symbolic links to: nvidia_drv.so and libglx.so, but then it started failing on libglx dependencies... (I'm using xorg-edgers nvidia-343. Don't recommend trying it but maybe it's helpful to find the issue..

Alberto: It appears that something wasn't happy still (modules were built and everything). I ended up uninstalling and reinstalling the nvidia packages and all seems fine now. Sorry about the noise.

You're still loading nouveau Cary. Try the following:

sudo update-alternatives --auto x86_64-linux-gnu_gl_conf
sudo ldconfig
sudo update-initramfs -c -k all
sudo chmod -x /usr/bin/gpu-manager

Carybielenberg: I think you're typing the file contents by hand. I'm going to need the full files. Please install the "pastebinit" package (sudo apt-get install pastebinit) and paste here the links that you get by typing the following commands:

1) grep nvidia /etc/modprobe.d/* | pastebinit
2) lsmod | pastebinit
3) dmesg | pastebinit
4) pastebinit /var/log/gpu-manager.log

I do regularly update my system (desktop), but only reboot it once every few months. Yesterday I was forced to reboot, and my uptime of 112 days was gone. Upon reboot I ran into the same issue as this ticket describes. Having had my fair share of X11 issues in the past, this issue was non-trivial to fix, and I only managed to do so with the steps ~mlankhorst provided. Somewhat more novice users surely will be at wits end and will probably feel they need to resort to a complete reinstall, or switch to Windows (again) instead.
