Bug Description

The battery icon in the system settings is the only icon shown in colour (green partially-filled rectangle). This seems like an oversight since every other icon is monochrome.

Please consider making this icon monochrome for consistency with the others.

Thanks for your bug report, that's not a bug though. The design says it should use the same icon as the indicator, so the icon should change with the charge (that's not working yet but tracked as bug #1336712)

IMHO it is acceptable to be "dynamic" and show the actual percentage of battery remaining, but it should also be monochrome when displayed in the settings view.

Please can this bug be reconsidered. I am using image r185 and the panel (now) shows a filled monochrome battery icon.... whereas the system settings still show a green filled battery icon.

Regardless of whether the panel and system setting being dynamic,, they should be consistent (in-sync).

that's bug #1336712 as said before, should we mark it as duplicate then?

Is bug 1351383 likely to be implemented for the release? If not, I think this should be treated as a separate bug.

As shown in <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SystemSettings#phone>, *all* the System Settings icons should be in color; the grey icons are placeholders. Keeping them all monochrome would make the dynamic updating much less effective, and wouldn't work at all for the Cellular icon when SIM colors are implemented.

summary: - system settings are entirely monochrome except for the battery icon
+ system settings will have color icons for all panels

As far as I know, the system settings panel has always been designed with mono icons in mind which should reflect the state of the indicators (i.e. the same icons are used), despite we have tested colourful icons at some point (it didn't work).

The mono icon stuff has been approved during the sprint in Cape Town, earlier this year.

Note that many indicator icons will be modified soon to use only one one colour and transparency except the battery indicator that will remain partly green when charging and red when (nearly) empty.

Matthew Paul Thomas (mpt) wrote : Re: system settings are entirely monochrome except for the battery icon

As shown by the sketch, I did not design System Settings with mono icons in mind. :-) And the icon style was not mentioned during the System Settings session in Cape Town.

Anyway, Benjamin has decided that for now at least:
* Battery should use color only when battery is low, like the indicator icon does;
* categories with an overall on/off state -- Bluetooth and Wi-Fi -- should have a colored icon when in the on state;
* all other icons should be monochrome.

If Matthieu is correct that colorful icons already exist, providing the color variants for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi should be quick. But if that can't be done by RTM, Benjamin's second preference is for all icons to be monochrome, including Battery.

Changes is the MP above are the following:

Topbar:
- New transfer indicators: transfer-progress now indicates that you are both downloading and uploading, transfer-progress-download that you're downloading only and trasnfer-progress-upload that you're uploading only.
- All the other indicators remain the same (except their colour for some of them).

System Settings:
- The wifi indicator must be replaced by two icons (enabled/disabled states): preferences-network-wifi-no-connection-symbolic and preferences-network-wifi-active-symbolic.
- The cellular network icon is now called preferences-network-cellular-symbolic
- The blutooth indicator must be replaced by two icons (enabled/disabled states): preferences-network-bluetooth-disabled-symbolic and preferences-network-bluetooth-active-symbolic
- New designs for notification and accounts settings

We are unlikely to complete the work to display icons based on state for rtm, in which case we will switch the battery icon to monochrome for consistency as suggested in comment #8

In order to address bug #1355803 we also need an update icon with two states

Pat, we don’t need any extra icons for that, just a badge like the Launcher already has. That couldn't be done with icon artwork anyway, because the badge should show the number of updates available. <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareUpdates#prompt-mobile>
