Bug Description

The bug is as follows:

The whole system freezes except the mouse. After 5 seconds, the screen turns off as if he put on standby.

After 20 to 30 seconds, in most cases, the screen turns back on and it is possible to resume the job. But sometimes, the screen comes back but the rest is still frozen and then the screen turns off again, on again and so on. In this case, a forced reboot is required.

However, while the system is frozen, magic keys (reisub) are still functional.

I noticed that this bug occurs mainly when I used my pc so active (file transfer, web browsing, video playback, etc). I left my pc on for several days without working on it and according to the system log, the bug has not manifested.

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a kernel version where you were not having this particular problem? This will help determine if the problem you are seeing is the result of the introduction of a regression, and when this regression was introduced. If this is a regression, we can perform a kernel bisect to identify the commit that introduced the problem.

Hi jsalisbury,

I tested the following kernels:
3.13
3.14
3.15
3.16.0-6 (actual)
3.16.0-999 (kernel.ubuntu.com - daily build)

The result is the same ... After a while it freezes. I have this bug for about two weeks but I can not say what is the update that would cause.

I tried installing the latest drivers via the ppa free of Oibaf: http://ppa.launchpad.net/oibaf/graphics-drivers/ubuntu/ but the bug is still there.

galen, did this problem not occur in a release prior to Utopic?

penalvch, the only problem is utopic. With Ubuntu 14.04 or older versions, there is no problem.

galen, the next step is to fully commit bisect in order to identify the offending commit. Could you please do this following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection ?

From wiki, I understood goal and purpose of the operation, but I don't know where to start and what to do..!?

Step by step would be welcome. :)

Sorry, I do what I can to help report bugs but I have not had computer training and there, it's high to my level of understanding. ^^
