Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

The system hangs completly after a while if the compiz is enabled.
Steps to reproduce :
On my thinkpad t43p with ati firegl 5200 :
Install ubuntu which has compiz enabled by default.
Just work, switch between windows etc.. It will eventually freeze just wait it happens.
I can't be sure that's the trigger, but it happens often on opening a menu, start menu right-click etc....
The version of the driver is 6.7.191 and it happens also with the 6.6.19x series.

After a test of compiz on an nvidia, it happens the same thing, so it seems that the ati driver is not to blame fot it.

Thanks for reporting this issue in Xorg and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, there's not enough information to troubleshoot this, because none of the logs include an error message indicating what the problem is.

First, can you try this new -ati that we are evaluating for possible inclusion in Gutsy? http://people.ubuntu.com/~bryce/Testing/ati/

Next, if the bug still occurs, please follow the directions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingXorg to try to find an indication of what the error being encountered is.

Alternatively, if you can find a more deterministic way to reproduce the problem quickly, that could be a help.

Fwiw, I've also seen freezes when using compiz, but until we can reliably reproduce it, it'll be hard to find a fix.

i have exactly the same issues!

When using compiz on open source ati driver system just freezes. After hard reset there isn't any errors related to this freeze in logs.

I don't know if it's related but I had the same type of complete freeze with my nvidia post without compiz.
This could be two different problems or not I have to investigate more.
But since it is systematic it "must" be fixed

i don't think it's related, because i have the same setup on nvidia card and there it works flawlessly. it only happens on my ati setup. Also with newer ati driver 6.7.192 for me things get even worse, freezes happens more often.

I also noticed that this freezes occure when new windows are opening

i thought that here are more people reporting this bug, but it's only me and lucky.

rougly simillar bug is: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/138415

btw i tried the "new" 6.7.192 and its even worse,. i also noticed that only X server is locked up, because my remote ssh sessions work ok, and there isn't anything in the logs, and i cannot kill X server ( even with -9). i was also using htop on remote session and X doesn't use extra CPU...

if there is anything else that i could do or try to fix this issue, just ask ;)

Thanks for the replies, but unfortunately none have information that will help troubleshoot this. We need to have either logs that display a debuggable error message (look in Xorg.*.log.* and ~/.xsession-errors particularly), or exact steps to reproduce the problem. Just knowing "it freezes" really isn't enough to go off of.
