Bug Description

My ASUS Radeon 9250 GE/TD 256MB (AGP 8x) graphics card, locks up when using it's accelerated 3D features using the DRI driver on Gutsy Gibbon using version 6.6.193-1ubuntu1.

The locks occur when enabled desktop effects, or when starting a 3D application like ioQuake3.

Ubuntu Feisty did not have this issue, this 9250 was rock solid on Feisty!

Also when replacing my ASUS Radeon 9250 with a Club3D Radoen 9600 Pro, the lockups disappear, even when using the same driver.

So this issue is confined to 9250's (or at least r200 series cards).

Thanks for your bug report. Do you have any options set in xorg.conf? Try running without an xorg.conf.

You may want to test a newer driver, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/XorgOnTheEdge
If the issue persists on the newest drivers, please attach /var/log/Xorg.0.log

The same happens to me with a Radeon 9250.
When a 3d app pops up, xorg freezes.
(I must say that I experienced freezes with an ATI X600 at work, too)

My system is an updated Gutsy tribe 5.

I solved the issue downgrading to xserver-xorg-video-ati_6.6.3-2ubuntu6_i386.deb from Feisty.
So it's a regression!

Deleting xorg.conf was not useful.

Now desktop effects, games, 3D and so on, work perfectly.
No freezes anymore.

Emanuele.

I said "no freezes anymore".
Well, I was wrong.
X continues to freeze, albeit with lesser frequency.
The computer works, the cursor moves, but no click and no keyboard is possible as if focus was stolen...
I am rather sad.

Test:
general working OK
all the gl screensavers OK
desktop effects OK
games:
chromium OK
frozen bubbles OK
licity NG ok
neverball OK
vegastrike OK
planet penguin racer freezed once

wengophone OK
inkscape OK
openoffice OK
google earth works better without desktop effects OK

it seems ok.
However, I attach the xorg log.

Yesterday evening I opened the " ? > Information " window of Openoffice.org.
This freezed the computer.
From then on, the computer has begun to freeze as often as before... as if something odd was written on the card...

I read somewhere (forgot where) that glxinfo reset something.
I will try if can reset this freezing condition of my card that renders my computer unusable.

Sorry for my ugly description.

Pulled video-ati 6.7.193-1ubuntu1.
Nothing changed.

Seems solved adding this option to xorg.conf:

Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO]"
        Driver "ati"
        BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
        Option "BusType" "PCI" <--
EndSection

Graphical performance suffers: glxgears went from 700 to 500.
Desktop effects are rather unusable.
Thanks, for your kind attention.

Finally solved?
I opened the AGP bus in the bios to a much larger bandwidth.
New standard xorg.conf (dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg).
No more Option "BusType" "PCI".
Very good performance.
Everything seems to work now. Such a stupid problem...

Hope this helps.
Wonderful Gutsy!

Was it the AGP aperture size that you modified? From/to what value?

Emanuele Gissi (emanuele-gissi-gmail) wrote :

I opened it from 64 to 512 MB/s.

AGP 8x is 2.1 GB/s maximum. But, for my card, 512 seems enough.
Please, tell me what you think about this solution.

AGP aperture is not directly a bandwidth tuning, it's an addressing size, see http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/overclocking/vidcard/43

I have seen some reports where raising it helped against some ati driver issues.

Pascal, would you have the possibility to 1. try the newest ati driver and 2. modify AGP aperture in BIOS?

Hi,

I am also using ATI 9250 Series card from ASUS. It is and AGP card. I just did a fresh install of gutsy. To get started with install i used safe vesa mode drivers to install from bootable cd.

Then i installed the latest radeon drivers. but when i try to enable radeon from gnome "screens & Graphics" control panel, i am now left stuck in 800x600 resolution and it automatically reverts to vesa driver.

I am now going to use Emanuele's xorg.conf file device settings and see if i get any luck. Also change the AGP aperature size in bios to 512 which is Currently 256.

Other then that i have nothing installed so maybe i need to be pointed to some tutorial to get dependency packs. After fresh gutsy install no updates installed even when software updates informs there are updates. I manually installed latest radeon drivers from the link given above, its version is 6.7.196. I installed these 2 packages.
1. xserver-xorg-video-ati-dbg_6.7.196+git2071112-0ubuntu0tv_i386.deb
2. xserver-xorg-video-ati_6.7.196+git2071112-0ubuntu0tv_i386.deb

In my bios (motherboard AD77 Inifinity KT400) there is no 512MB aperture size. The only options are 256m 129m 64m 32m 16m 8m 4m 2g 1g

I have left it as before on 256M

Other agp options are
AGP Mode - 8X (cannot be changed)

AGP driving control - AUTO
x AGP Driving Value - DA

AGP fast writes - enabled

AGP Master 1 WS Write - Enabled

AGP Master 1 WS Read - Enabled

AGP 3.0 Calibration cycle - disabled

These bios setings plus Enamuale's xorg.conf settings applied i am getting no signal input to the monitor. (Monitor is CMV 221D LCD connected via DVI connector)

Also i can not use command line either Alt+ctrl+f2 etc, wont work. I can get in with recovery mode by pressing escape key during bootup and then reverting to the backup xorg.conf file and start again.

I am going to find a VGA cable and remove dvi cable and see if it work, also once i am in gui on the desktop i will post my xorg.conf file which gives no signal.

ok this time i enabled AGP 3.0 Calibration cycle in bios and i get to the login window and it crashes there with garbled graphics on ubuntu logo. The resolution seems to be better (loading cursor sorta looks smaller then what it was in 800x600). I also tried the VGA cable same thing there.

reconfiguring the xserver results in the same problem, it detects ati as appropriate choice RV280 "Radeon 9200 PRO" but it still freezes.
I manually changed xorg.conf file and selected driver to radeon from ati and it still gets stuck.

what is going wrong here ?

Only way to get gui is using vesa as driver ?

Help appreciated.

Navu, try specifying: Option "AGPMode" "4"
If that doesn't work, take it out and try: Option "BusType" "PCI"

I had tried that but it did not work. il just wait for a while now and update the whole system to be open source compatible. thanks anyways . i also tried going to previous distributions and they wont even boot into xserver for installing.

I don't know if this will fix this specific issue, but I've backported a bunch of high importance patches that upstream recommended, that fix problems sort of like this one, so I think it would be worth the time to test. Please try this .deb and report what you find:

http://people.ubuntu.com/~bryce/Testing/ati/

If we can determine that the patches in this deb fix this bug, they may be candidates for backporting to Hardy.
