Bug Description

I went to the appearance settings by right-clicking on the desktop to change the visibility of the launcher, have set the sensitivity, exited after changes were made, after a few times of showing and hiding the launcher Compiz crashed and the display couldn't be restored not even after going into TTY and using "compiz --replace". compiz-core has shown what appeared to be a fatal error that it was unable to initialize the display, so the only option was to do a hard shutdown.

Could you please be a little more explicit about what you mean by "Compiz crashed"? What symptoms did you experience?

Also, you please give more details about "after going in to TTY"? Were you using an alternate virtual terminal (eg. control-alt-F2) or a terminal application on the desktop (eg. control-alt-T)?

What happened was that everything from the screen disappeared - the panel, launcher - only the wallpaper remained. It was impossible to launch any application, the only possible solution was to enter TTY (standard mode by hitting CTRL+ALT+F1).

Definitely sounds like a Compiz crash.

Trying to launch compiz, or and X11 application, from a VT (control-alt-F1) will not work, since there is no X server available on the console. It might work if you explcitly set the DISPLAY environment variable (export DISPLAY=:0.0) first.

It's unfortunate, but none of the attached log files reveal any information about the cause of this crash. Do you see any files in /var/crash?
