[gutsy] rhythmbox cannot load UPnP plugin: python-louie package missing

when i try to load upnp plugin i get the following message.

so obviously cannot find python dependencies, should this be shipped with rhythmbox?, or is another lib which isn't in the gutsy repo yet?.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Confirmed there's a missing dependency on python-louie , there's need to a sync cause it's available in debian, you can try to install it for now as a workaround, the package is here: http://packages.debian.org/unstable/python/python-louie ; thanks for your report.

I've installed the deb package to test if it works.

I've got got a mediatomb server which i can connect to from my ps3. Rhythmbox doesn't see it.

Howdoes this plugin work?

Same here - I installed Louie from http://cheeseshop.python.org/pypi/Louie and I was able to enable the plugin - but it does not find my Mediatomb server and there is no gui-configuration avaliable... I searched with the gconf-editor but was also unable to find there any configuration (except "active" and "hidden" for the plugin).

In the most recent version of Gutsy, I see a "Unable to activate plugin UPnP sharing support" error dialog when trying to enable the plugin. I see this on stdout whens starting from a terminal:

Do you have python-louie installed?, I just check and can't see any dependency or even suggestion to python-louie in the rythmbox package, maybe we should open another bug to inform about this missing dependency in the package.

How about the python-coherence package, which according to the package description is "Coherence is a framework written in Python enabling your application to participate in digital living networks, at the moment primarily the UPnP universe."

Maybe this is needed for the upnp-plugin to function properly as well?

Why does louie have a priority of "wishlist"?

I agree that maybe this shouldn't be a critical bug, but then you should remove the upnp plugin from rhythmbox, cause as it is you have a broken dependency issue (which I think does not fall under wishlist).

I believe we can't or shouldn't close the bug until rhythmbox request as dependency or suggest the installation of python-louie, so this inability to load the plugin won't happen again in the future.

as soon as python-louie was uploaded to gutsy i uninstall the debian version i've installed and install this one and works just fine.

I've installed python-louie and activated the plugin but it doesn't seem to be finding the upnp shares on my network. Is the configuration supposed to happen automagickally? I've checked gconf and the only value listed under /apps/rhythmbox/plugins/upnp_coherence is active (true/false).

It would be nice if when I tried to enable the plugin rather than saying just "Error failed to load plugin" it could say that this plugin requires package python-louie and even nicer if it could have a button to install that packge for you.

Perhaps there could be a change in the description on the plugin manager, as a quick fix, to say make sure you have python-louie installed before trying this package.

It all worked fine, for me, as soon a I installed python-louie but I had to guess what to install and it was not obvious.

I've done a complete reinstall of Hardy Alpha 6 and all the plugins are installed automatically. When I try to activate the Upnp plugin in still says failed. I think this is not a good behavior. You're presenting a clean installation which fails to work in some parts. You've got two choices, don't install the upnp plugin automatically or install python-louie (which is in hardys repos).

This bug is still with us in Intrepid Ibex... However, this time, the sharing feature of Rhythmbox has been on the "cover" of ubuntu.com, so I guess alot more users will suffer from it this time.

This is still an issue in Karmic. I install python-coherence to get the plugin working.
