Bug Description

This one is very odd. I've been using Lyx for years, but this is the first time under Ubuntu. Its basically unusable since it loses keystrokes so often. I have to keep backing up to correct the typing and I can't anything done. I'm changing to using GVIM to type the text and I have to import it later.

Please help! This is one of my main applications. This is a deal-breaker. I'll switch distros if it will make Lyx work.

Hi Evan, this sounds very frustrating. I use LyX on Ubuntu (13.10 and 14.04) everyday and have never seen this. I recommend using the PPA to update to LyX 2.1. I think there is a good chance that it will fix the problem for you. See the instructions here:
http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/LyXOnUbuntu#toc3

If it doesn't fix the problem, there's likely something special about your setup. Are you using a clipboard manager? If you can provide a script to install the same programs and settings you are using from a fresh Ubuntu installation, I will test to see if I can reproduce. Only if you provide a script though so that all I have to do is sudo ./yourscript. e.g. put in "sudo apt-get install xxx" etc.

Yes, upgrading fixed that, but it then told me that it couldn't find half a million classes and I needed to reconfigure everything before I could output anything. Grrr ... so I rebooted to let the other upgrades I had done take effect (many of them system level) and now I don't even get X when it boots - I'm manually piecing things together with almost nothing working right.

So - thanks for the fix, the rest of the issues I can solve for myself (I hope - if not I can find a boot CD and a Gentoo tarball and be done with binary packages and everything breaking because of a lousy upgrade).

Thanks for the quick reply, Evan. Sounds like you're running into some bad luck. If you think LyX is to blame for anything and you have a script that would allow me to reproduce the issue on a clean Ubuntu installation, please let me know. I'd be very interested in taking a look.

Otherwise, good luck figuring everything out and I hope you get your system up and running soon.

No - I think the only Lyx issue was losing keystrokes. The issue now is
just conflicts from trying to get my jack audio over-runs and misc crashes
down (system updates, lots of ppas with new jack versions, trying to
install newer kernels, ATI driver updates, etc) while simultaneously adding
too many ppas for stuff I'm trying to work on (arm cross-compilers, etc).

Trying to duplicate the current state would require an in-depth knowledge
of Ubuntu's package manager which likely knows what all it did to my
system.

OK - I did a complete reload of my system to Ubuntu Studio. Everything worked fine, including LyX, but I decided to "upgrade" it and it broke just like the old one did!!! Thats twice on two different Ubuntu versions, both of which were more or less clean with respect to TeX and stuff. I only played with the drivers and audio and stuff (hence moving to Studio).

Here's what Lyx 2.1 says ...

Due to some error in it, the layout file:

could not be loaded. A default textclass with default
layouts will be used. LyX will not be able to produce
correct output.

--------------------------------------

The layout file:
extbook
could not be found. A default textclass with default
layouts will be used. LyX will not be able to produce
correct output.

----------------------------------------

The module basic has been requested by
this document but has not been found in the list of
available modules. If you recently installed it, you
probably need to reconfigure LyX.

That's 3 dialog boxes of errors.

Hi Evan, thanks for the detailed report. So it sounds like this bug report should be closed because we have never heard anything else like it and we don't have anything else to reproduce the original problem.

As for the new problem, I see you've resolved it as stated here:
http://www.lyx.org/trac/ticket/9163

Hopefully there can be improvements to avoid such problems in the future.

Glad you finally got things up and running as they should!

Yes! Thank you. I don't see a "Close - Can't Reproduce" option. Should it be marked invalid?

And yes, I figured when trying a new PPA I should just go ahead and report it upstream, then on a whim I decided to just delete the config and it fixed it - shameful to have it change the config and not recognize the old format!

And I wouldn't say things are running as they should - Lyx is ... but I've got problems I can't even figure out how to diagnose. Seems to be dbus-related problem - some sort of loop. Locks up the whole desktop for a couple of seconds at a time. Fix one problem and another pops up. I remember the days when Linux was simple and stable!

For whoever else this effects, see Bug #353449. Seems to be related and the state of Compiz "CopyTo Texture" may invoke this (or fix it). Something to try!
