[Asus X550LD] Touchpad not working/detected Ubuntu 14.04

Touchpad is detected as "PS/2 Logitech Wheel Mouse". The pointer is moving itself every three seconds a cm to the left side of the screen. Can't make anything with it. No moving of cursor, no clicking.
Also tried the newest upstream-kernel rc8 without any positive results.

Zara Noob, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (3.15-rc8) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-3.15-rc7

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:

Hello, I have the same problem here. I'd be willing to test. However, you seem to be suggesting to use a kernel for marked for Utopic, even if we are on Ubuntu 14.04 (Ubuntu Gnome, in my case). Is this correct? Do I understand it right you are suggesting to install this kernel? http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.15-utopic/

I ended up installing the latest mainline kernel, 3.15.0-031500-generic, from the link above

The problems persists. I edited the tags as suggested above. Anything else I can do?

Same issue on linux mint 17,i tried with kernel 3.15 but the problem persist.
i notice that if i remove psmouse module with "rmmod psmouse" the touchpad is recognized as "AT Raw Set 2 keyboard" instead of "PS/2 Logitech Wheel Mouse".
The touchpad in asus x550ld must be recognized as elantech touchpad but i can't find a way to do that...

so, finally i was able to test the newest upstream-kernel (v3.16-rc1-utopic) & with this, everything went worse. i wasn't able to enter the login-screen. all i saw, was just a neverending report of some "psmouse serio4 error" & some usb-port (o.s.) "not suspendend yet" message.
think i'll try now the previous kernel (v3.15.1-utopic), to examine, if then i'll be able to enter the start-screen.

Just to add to this. I just purchased an Asus K450L and installed Ubuntu 14.04 and the touchpad also does not work. I tried booting with "psmouse.proto=bare" on the kernel cmdline as a workaround and that did not work either.

Hi everyone, maybe i've found the solution for this problem. I recently bought an Asus F550LD (which in realty is an X550) and i have some problem, but the strange thing is that when i try the live version of ubuntu 14.04 on this notebook in exposure everything works (or almost). So before changing it, I used the command "sudo lshw -html" and I got the hardware list of pc.
Then when I changed the notebook with the one in exposure i repeat the commandon this one.
Finally I compared the two hardware cards. There are two difference. one litttle difference on the clock of processor (which is the same) and the Ram. The Ram is the same for power, but different for producer.

I think the problem is the Ram, on which the OS is loaded.

It works on the live cd is because You have upgraded Your kernel so You have a different version on the live cd and on Your box.

Please give me dmesg from the live cd when booting with "i8042.debug=1".
Also You may try downgrading Your kernel by installing linux-image-3.13.0-24-generic.

This should enable the mouse to work as a normal touchpad mouse, so no multi-touch.

You need to add a Kernel Boot Parameter to set the flag psmouse.proto=bare which will enable PS/2 Mouse Emulation mode on your touchpad.

To do this you can edit your default grub file.

sudo nano /etc/default/grub

Find the line that mentions GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" (or something similar) and add the flag to the end of the quoted string.

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash psmouse.proto=bare"

Then save the file and run a grub update.

sudo update-grub

Then restart the system and (hopefully) enjoy your new touchpad in PS/2 Emulation Mode.

This is a temporary fix as Hans De Goede mentions, this isn't a trivial fix. If I'm reading the situation correctly, support for the software that handled the touchpad used in the ASUS 550 range (and some other models) was deprecated in 14.04 and a suitable replacement hasn't yet been developed. So for now we don't get multi-touch in 14.04.

Having struggled with this for a while and finding nothing but launchpad bug reports, I'm pretty happy to finally have a working touchpad even if it doesn't have multi-touch!
