Xubuntu: No startup notifications

While the option "visual feedback for program start"*) in the properties of a starter object in the xfce4-panel is set, there is no change of the mouse cursor while the program loads.
Same behavior at program start from whisker menu.
This is very annoying on slow machines.

This looks like a duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/862662 .
The (also ugly) workaround is to switch to gdm.
