can't select a word using shift+ctrl+left|right arrow

shift+ctrl+left|right arrow works fine for selecting words when desktop effects are disabled, but it doesn't work when desktop effects are enabled.

I fixed this by turning off all the compiz plugins and turning on only the features I required one at a time to test which one was blocking <ctrl><shift>+<left>|<right>. I haven't identified which blocked the <ctrl><shift> but it seems to work again now.

This maybe the root cause of the problem: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3198250

Try disabling the Enhanced Desktop Zoom and see if that corrects the problem.

I checked it again and now it seems to be working, even with zoom on.
