Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. For using fast-user-switch-applet you need to have a gdm session running, it you don't have one it will not work.

I started fast-switch-user-applet when I had kdm running. After this it tried reload applet some times and closed. I'm now using gdm, but still I don't have this applet. I don't find command where I could start applet and try will it crash with gdm, too. Sound playback applet crashed, too. So I don't know is it some universal error.

Is bug #320240 the same bug? KDM and Gnome should be compatible - if the fast-user-switch feature does not work, then is should be silently disabled; we should not be getting an error popup saying that an application has crashed every time we log in. Which is what currently happens with Jaunty.

Is this bug the same as bug 290509 ?

fast-switch-user-applet also crashes (signal 5) if you've stopped GDM and try to start Gnome with "startx" from
a console prompt. It needs a more graceful mode of exit if GDM isn't available!
