I opened terminal and typed: sudo apt-get install -f and I found this error: /var/lib/dpkg/info/flashplugin-nonfree.postinst: 107: Syntax error: "do" unexpected (expecting "fi")
So I opened that file and on that line in the beginning and at the end of that line I found some junk symbols, once I deleted them, it worked fine, the same with line 110

Here the problem is worse.
My first try, before reading this thread, was to remove flashplugin. Then I got another error in the prerm script as well. Then I edited both script files (prerm and postinst), removing all those strange chars. But the prerm is still broken. I get the error message:
/var/lib/dpkg/info/flashplugin-nonfree.prerm: line 30: syntax error near unexpected token `;;'

Apparently apt tries to remove the package, before reinstalling it.
I've already looked into the script file, but found nothing near that line different from the rest. Well, I'm not a shell script programmer...
Can anyone help me?

Thanks.

Same problem here via the update manager.

I retried from the command line and apt-get now wants to uninstall thunderbird and enigmail!

flashplugin-nonfree is already the newest version.
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  thunderbird enigmail
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
1 not fully installed or removed.
Need to get 0B of archives.
After unpacking 0B of additional disk space will be used.

Can't remove, reinstall or upgrade the package here, either. It's stuck in a broken, partially installed state.

Same error as above regarding the prerm script.

A package failed to install. Trying to recover:

The update is busted too

Reinstalled Gutsy due to other issues. Updated package installs flawlessly for me. However, as I stated above, the current package will NOT upgrade the previous, broken, package and said package CAN NOT BE REMOVED as is, right now. This is the real issue for those who aren't willing to reinstall the entire OS because of one broken package.

Then again, those people shouldn't be running Gutsy yet, either.

Yagisan: are you sure you updated your apt sources and marked the package for upgrade rather than reinstall? you should be receiving an error about prerm now, unless Persio and I are isolated cases. Check your setup and report back.

Yagi: my apologies. I should have checked MY setup before posting. This package does still contain the bug, as well as the prerm bug; for some reason it wasn't reported when I installed it, it acted like everything went well but the package is, indeed, broken.

Once I'm sure everything else is proper on my system, I'll look into this; hopefully I can be of more help than simply verifying what everyone else has already said.

Except that, even after a reboot... the plugin doesn't seem to work.

But at least it installs :)

So I tried to update this morning and I got something wrong with prerm file, tried to fix it with no luck, so I deleted it and it after that sudo apt-get install -f worked flawlessly :)

Today I've tried to update to version ubuntu7 from verision ubuntu5. It
was impossible due to an error:

/var/lib/dpkg/info/flashplugin-nonfree.prerm: 28: Syntax error: "do"
unexpected (expecting ";;")
dpkg: warning - previous script pre-removal returned error code 2
dpkg - trying to run script from new package...
prerm called with argument `failed-upgrade'
dpkg: processing error
/var/cache/apt/archives/flashplugin-nonfree_9.0.48.0.0ubuntu7_i386.deb
(--unpack):
subproces new pre-removal script returned error code 1
/var/lib/dpkg/info/flashplugin-nonfree.postinst: 107: Syntax error: "do"
unexpected (expecting "fi")
dpkg: error during cleaning environment:
subproces post-installation script returned error code 2
Processing errors:
 /var/cache/apt/archives/flashplugin-nonfree_9.0.48.0.0ubuntu7_i386.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

#####
I've translated it from Polish.
#####

It was impossible even to remove old package due to it's bad condition.

I got it to download and install fine, doesn't work but at least the
install went okay.

TC: See my comment directly above yours.

also find and copy (or link) libnpsoplugin.so and npwrapper.libflashplayer.so into the plugins directory; restart firefox and all should be good.

Hope this helps.
