Bug Description

Binary package hint: konqueror

I am doing my homework of testing the Kubuntu liveCD 7.10. And I found this problem:
  My internet connection is properly configured. I can ping google.com, I can use kopete to go IRC channel. But Konqueror is not able to go on internet I am getting this error message whatever the internet address is :
{{{
An error occurred while loading http://www.google.com
Could not connect to the host http://www.google.com
}}}

The workaround is to go in Settings>>configure Konqueror>>Cache and uncheck "Use cache".
It seems that for some reason the cache is not working on the liveCD at least may be this option could be turn off by default on Kubuntu.

Thank you

I've had this same problem on two different machines now. Both were laptops using wireless, and disabling cache fixed the problem.
On one machine, konqueror would work if the ethernet (eth0) cable was plugged in but not if it was running on wireless (wlan0). On the other machine, it worked with ethernet (eth0 again) and the madwifi driver (ath0) but not the ndiswrapper driver (wlan0). This leads me to believe that the interface name is somehow important with this bug(?)

Note that firefox works fine in all cases.

I had the same problem with a fresh install of Kubuntu Gusty. After uninstalling network-manager, network-manager-kde and installing netgo, Konquoror worked with cache enabled. Firefox works fine in all cases.

I have installed Kubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 regular release with KDE 3.5.9/Konqueror 3.5.9 (I upgraded from Gutsy). I am experiencing similar problem: I can't get Konqueror to load anything from the net when I have cache enabled. However, I am unable to get any decent error messages out of my system because "everything" just freezes up. I can't open another window on my machine. Konsole sessions stop responding (but somehow I can start new sessions in a Konsole window with a frozen konsole session tab open.) A lot of the command line programs like "top" stops responding.

However, the workaround is the same as described above: turn off cache and konqueror starts working. To me that indicates that this most probably is the same bug. I think this is a pretty serious problems as many good websites these days does not work efficiently without cache due to frequent reloads from server.

I am adding a comment here with links to some related information. It appears that Knetworkmanager may be to blame for all of this:

I am adding Knetwrokmanager to the list of culprits.

New update here:
I tried to turn off (not deinstall) knetworkmanager but it did not help me. Same partial system freeze/slowdown.
I tried to deinstall knetworkmanager but then I was not able to access the web!

Is this still an issue with KDE4 or Intrepid?

At the moment, neither is installed on the machine where I found the problem, an AMD64x2 on ASUS M2N-SLI motherboard with Nvidida Nforce590 chipset. Therefore I cannot give you any new test results from the same machine as of now. This machine is configured "conservatively" and stability is a priority.

I have a newer laptop with an intel core processor where I have allowed myself to play with cool new hacks such as KDE4, and on that machine I don't have any problems with the cache on using KDE4. That does not eliminate the possibility for it still being a problem on the AMD64X2 workstation, if the problem is related to specific pieces of hardware which is not installed on the laptop.

Hello
I am back with an update:
After upgrading to 8.10 Intrepid I can confirm I still have this issue, the upgrade and switch to KDE4 in this aspect had absolutely no effect.

The problems only affect my workstation with AMD64X2 processor, ASUS-M2N-SLI mptherboard and the Nvidia Nforce 590 Chipset. I also own a laptop (Intel based Toshiba) where I don't have this problem, so I suspect there may be some architecture-dependent error triggering involved.

All I need to do to trigger a system freeze on my desktop workstation is to go into Konqueror settings>cache>enable cache, and the machine grinds to a halt in about 10 seconds. A hardware reset button reboot is the only way I can get control of the machine again (well actually maybe some fancy escape key combinations on the keyboard could but I doubt it).
Bug CONFIRMED IN INTREPID.

Hi yml,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic . If the issue remains, please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 131767

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
