Bug Description

After updating from Xubuntu 13.10 (amd64) to Xubuntu 14.04 LTS (amd64) I have encountered a bug with my dual screen set up.

Running the XOrg screen driver (xserver-xorg-video-nouveau), it is possible to place/ drag and drop files and links on my left screen desktop. This is also the desktop that contains the system icons (e.g. removable drives, rubbish bin).

However, I I try to drag and drop a file or link on the right screen desktop, it will not "stick" and "fly back" to its original location on the left screen. Additionally, I noticed that, when dragging the file over the troubled desktop, the "placement squares" don't show up. They do on the functioning left screen.

Although I have a NVIDIA Corporation GK107 [GeForce GTX 650] Geforce I do run the XOrg driver since it gives me the best results with the software I'm using frequently. However, when I tested this during my initial install of Trusty, I noticed that I did not encounter this bug with the proprietary NVidia 304.117 driver (331.38 did not work for me at all). Running the NVidia 304.117 driver, it was possible to drag and drop/ place files and links on both screen desktops. Also the "placement squares" appeared on both screens when a file was dragged over it.

After returning to the XOrg driver, the problem reoccurred, and placement on the right screen was again not possible.

I can confirm this (Xubuntu 14.04 LTS).

Both my screens are the same dimensions (1920x1080), on a NVidia GeForce GTX 650 TI, connected through DVI.

With the update I received today (libcairo2*) the behaviour I described earlier disappeared.
It is now possible to place icons on both screens/ desktops.

On top of that this update also gave me a staggering speed increase!

Hence, I think this bug report can be closed, the issue is solved.

Goth Queen, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xorg 1316090

Please ensure you have xdiagnose installed, and that you click the Yes button for attaching additional debugging information.

As well, given the information from the prior release is already available, testing a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.

Dear Christopher,

Thanks for getting back to me on it.

Short answer is yes, it is still an issue. It was gone for a while, and I suspect it had something to do with a cairo update we got. However, that is my impression, I'm no dev of course, but we all thought it funny that this update came and our bug seemed to be gone. However, after a while the bug returned, and I guess since a month or so, the issue seems to have worsened, where now all the desktop icons reset themselves to default position (starting complete left top, and lining additional icons below it) on every (re)boot on all 3 boxes we have here. I already have done some digging on it, and have seen there are more people who are experiencing this bug.
As with the 1st bug I reported (no icon placement on right screen of dual screen setup - #1316090) it seems to be connected to the icons.screen0.XXX.rc files in ~/.config/xfce4/desktop. A fix seems to have been upstreamed but I haven't seen it yet (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xfdesktop4/+bug/1335492, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xfdesktop4/+bug/1307251).

To come back to your specific question: I think we are fine for now just being patient, and see if the situation changed when the fixes from 1335492 and 1307251 come through. If that doesn't change a thing, it won't be a big deal for us. However, if we can help you guys with development and want me to send a diagnosis anyway, please just let me know. I'd be more than happy help with the great job you guys are doing (if I can ;-)

Thanks again and greetz,

Natalia

Hi Christopher,

OK, will do as soon as I got some time to spare. Don't worry, it won't be weeks but give me a day or so. One question before I start though: can I check this as running it as a Live CD you think?

All the 3 boxes that are showing the "reset/ move all icons to complete left upon reboot" bug (2 Xubuntu 14.04.2 amd64, and one i386 notebook) are production machines and as you can understand I don't want to disrupt their daily use too much. Only one has a dual screen set up and that one has the "can only place icons on one screen" behaviour, but all show the icon placement reset bug.

So can you hold my hand a bit and give me pointers so I can give you exactly what you're looking for? I saved your message about apport and xdiagnose so no need resending that; consider it done. Before I start, can you please tell me:
--- whether I can run the daily builds as LiveCD to check if they show the same behaviour?
--- Do you want me to do apport/ xdiagnose for the installs showing the bugs (this is what I expect) or the new daily builds?
--- If the daily builds also show the same behaviour, you also want the apport/xdiagnose from those ones, right?

While typing this I already grabbed the Xubuntu Trusty daily build iso's for both amd64 and i386 (18FEB build) so am ready to go if the Live CD option is OK for you. If not, than it will take me a bit more time, but can do; will hook up an additional HD and will put a new install (incl. grub) on that additional HD leaving our production installs untouched.

Thanks again for your help!

Natalia

Hi Christopher,

ORIGINAL BUG SUMMARY:
As you'll remember I reported a bug for the XFCE desktop (Xubuntu 14.04LTS).
[1] On one box (Xubuntu 14.04LTS amd64) with a dual screen setup it was not possible to place icons on the right hand screen. Icons wouldn't "stick" and return to their original prosition on the left hand screen.
[2] All our boxes (2 Xubuntu 14.04LTS amd64 and 1 Xubuntu 14.04LTS i386, 3.13.0.46) started resetting the specific icon placement on the desktop about a month ago. This means that, if the user placed icons on a specific location on the desktop, after a reboot, the icon location changed. Often all icons were placed to the "left hand default position", however, sometimes some, but not all were returned to a complete left hand default position.
The uname -a info of all boxes are:
The i386 install - Linux minipussy 3.13.0-46-generic #77-Ubuntu SMP Mon Mar 2 18:26:13 UTC 2015 i686 i686 i686 GNU/Linux
The amd64 single screen install - Linux PUSSYcomputer 3.13.0-46-generic #77-Ubuntu SMP Mon Mar 2 18:23:39 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
The amd64 dual screen install - Linux HAL9000X 3.13.0-46-generic #77-Ubuntu SMP Mon Mar 2 18:23:39 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

METHOD:
You asked me to check whether the daily versions also showed the same behaviour. Hence, I downloaded the daily/ current version of Xubuntu 14.04LTS, following the link you sent me. I installed them on a LiveUSB, using Unetbootin, and check for similar behaviour as I described above.
After installing, I left everything in default except:
--- Changed my keyboard layout with Settings Manager
--- Changed the default icons on the desktop (e.g.home, system drives) to create a clean playing field.
--- Added the Action Buttons to the top panel for easy shut down/ reboot.

The daily/ current versions, as retrieved following your link, and used were:
Linux xubuntu 3.16.0-30-generic #40~14.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jan 15 17:45:15 UTC 2015 i686 i686 i686 GNU/Linux

RESULTS - i386:
FYI, I made screenshots so you can see what happened. I placed files on the desktop and rebooted a couple of times.
For i386, the same behaviour was observed. However, some, but not all icons were returned to their default position. See the images
Screenshot - daily i386 before reboot.jpg
Screenshot - daily i386 after reboot.jpg

As you can see the position of some, but not all files were changed on the desktop. The files File 06 - File 08.jpg and the file Christoper (text of this message) were moved to a default left hand position.
When the files were placed back to their original position (i.e. Screenshot - Daily i386 before reboot), a new reboot again changed the position of these files, placing them again on a left hand default position. Hence, this behaviour is reproduceable and consistent.

Additional note 01: when moving the images (e.g. File 05 hanging.jpg, File 07.jpg) the cursor appearance changed. Could unfortunately not make a screenshot of it. It turned into 2 cursors/ arrows and a part of the image. This happened ONLY when moving the image files. The original (proper) appearance returned when for example placing the cursor somewhere in this text.

Christopher,

I submitted the information through apport like you asked. Since I'm not familiar with this, and it took me some install steps, I hope all went well.

I also realised that with my last message, I may have followed the wrong link, hence tested the wrong versions.
That is why I did the test I described in my last message again. The results are below are interesting.
You can find them in the csv I attached.

Since our i386 is single screen only, I was not able to test the dual screen set up performance. The ones labeled "Production" are of course our normal production machines, the installs that prompted us to file the bug report.

Fed by some online reading, I'd think xfdesktop4 might be the culprit? But then again, I'm just a simple user. Just to be sure I noted the xfdesktop4 version numbers also for you.
I also saw that the icon rearranging bug has also been reported with xfdesktop4 4.12 (see Bug 1335492 and 1307251). I however have not been able to reproduce it, even after 10+ reboots.
