Bug Description

When I close my laptop and then open it, it will not wake up. The screen remains black. Otherwise the system is fine when running all applications, games, and such.

WORKAROUND: The system wakes when using the proprietary drivers but seems to have stability issues when using it (artifacts on dash every couple of days that disappear when I log out and log back in and occasional freezes where the screen is black with white lines on wake once every several days).

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.15 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

For whatever reason the F.48 bios does not work on my machine and I always have to roll it back to the F.46 release. I've tried updating it multiple times and windows 8 will not boot, which is kind of ironic since the F.48 bios update is to ensure compatibility of the laptop panel buttons with windows 8. When Windows boots it shows a frown face and says something about a system error and just reboots. Ubuntu loads with the F.48 bios but the wireless won't work. I went ahead and loaded it just to see whether it made any difference on the waking from suspend and it did not. I can hear the hard drive wake but the screen stays black and I have to reboot. If you need me to print the bios screens I can, but I'd rather not reload the F.48 bios yet again unless you really need me to do so.

Steve Jones, did this problem not occur in a release prior to Trusty?

No, it has not worked on 12.04, 13.04, or 13.10 using the open source driver. However, it does work when using the proprietary driver.

Steve Jones, the next step is to fully commit bisect from 13.10 to 14.04 in order to identify the offending commit. Could you please do this following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection ?
