Startup Disk Creator dont erase pen drive

When I tried to erase the pen drive, so I saw this message:

Same thing here while trying to format a USB thumbdrive in trusty. Looks very similar to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/udisks/+bug/1059872 and, like the latter, could be one of the many symptoms of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/util-linux/+bug/1012081 (ancient util-linux in Debian/Ubuntu).

A workaround is to use gparted to format the target disk to fat32. (The Disks utility won't work either, see those other bugs.)
