release upgrade from Saucy to Trusty fails to Calculate the changes

Attempting to upgrade from Saucy < 13.10 > to Trusty <14.04 > which came up as ready for install in the software manager.

it first failed from the gui

I ran it in the commandline to see if it would work any better.

I cleared out all extra repositories and tried this a few times

every time it fails to calculate the changes/upgrade

Could not calculate the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu

* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

command 'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal.
