gnome-icon-theme 2.8.0-2 introduced the usage of
gtk-update-icon-cache in postinst (other theme packages have started
using it too).

The icon cache doesn't work properly on my system:

    * Nautilus just shows a blank sheet of paper for all files

    * Galeon and Epiphany lost their spinner icon and some icons
      in their toolbars (new tab, fullscreen, ...)

I'm using the Gnome icon theme, deleting
/usr/share/icons/gnome/icon-theme.cache and
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/icon-theme.cache makes the icons show up again.

Regenerating the cache files breaks them again.

Like the original bug reporter, I'm on arch: powerpc (32bit though) too.
Maybe an endianness issue?

 It seems the problem of icons borken on desktops is PPC specific, we've
 grabed some PPC developers and they're tracking the bug. Meanwhile,
 you might want to fix your problem by running:
    rm -f /usr/share/icons/*/icon-theme-cache

This is a bug of gtk-update-icon-cache on powerpc we discovered this
morning. Until it is fixed, you can safely remove the icon-theme.cache
files.

powerpc machines (which makes a lot of sense), but they only work on the
former. So the bug might actually be in the code that deals with the
cache files in the GTK library itself?
