Are you sure you mean hicolor-icon-theme? I upgraded the theme myself,
and I'm not experiencing any bug with it.
Could you please run:
dpkg -L hicolor-icon-theme | wc -l
and:
debsums hicolor-icon-theme
That should check the integrity of your package.
If you can do so, please check if creating a new user on your system
and selecting this theme works.
Thanks,

Sorry, no need to do that. It's completely normal that the package is
empty, it only uses icons in gnome-icon-theme.

Please try that and send a screenshot of the problem.

Hi,
It seems the problem of icons borken on desktops is PPC specific, we've
grabed some PPC developers and they're tracking the bug. Meanwhile,
you might want to fix your problem by running:
rm -f /usr/share/

This is a bug of gtk-update-
morning. Until it is fixed, you can safely remove the icon-theme.cache
files.

This has been reported against libgtk2.0-bin, we're working on it.

I made a typo in my first message, and mentionned icon-theme-cache
instead of icon-theme.cache. the above command should really work.
