Bug Description

After I minimize/maximize an application the handling of local window-coordinate sometimes will be broken. The actual position of the mouse pointer in the window is lower the the position of the cursor on the screen (about the window title height or unity panel height). Most of time it happens with firefox (after fullscreen flash-video) but also with other apps.

I have same problem in previous versions of Ubuntu, if the "window placement" plugin was disabled. In this case the plugin is active.

Have found a 100% way to reproduce:
- Open Firefox, youtube, play a video
- Open it to fullscreen
- Use "Alt-Tab" and select "Show desktop" / Use Hot-Corner to minimize all apps
- Use "Alt-Tab to select the firefox again
- move mouse pointer to any link - link is not active
- move the pointer window title height + top panel height pixels up - link is aktive
- Enjoy the bug :)

I have check some other apps: LibreOffice Writer, Deadbeef (gtk2). All apps are affected to this bug, but only if the are maximized. So, the Problem is possible in the part of compiz, which removes the window decorations for the maximized windows.

I got this bug in Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit (Unity). For instance, after this problem appears, I can no longer click on "Open new tab" button in Firefox (it opens the Clock/Calendar indicator instead if I have more tabs open in Firefox and the "Open new tab" button is bellow the clock indicator).

It seems to only happen if the window was maximised like Pavel Fischer said above. If I restore the window (after this bug causes the problem), the mouse resumes working correctly.

If I disable "Show live previews of windows in the Switcher" (in CompizConfig Settings Manager - Ubuntu Unity Plugin - Switcher), this bug disappears (or I did not encounter it yet).

But with "Show live previews of windows in the Switcher", Hot corners no longer works after a reboot (I found the solution to disable "Show live previews of windows in the Switcher" in order to keep Hot Corner working after a reboot). I have Hot Corners set (with Unity Tweak Tool) to "Window Spread" for the lower right corner.

Correction for my comment (#12):

This statement was wrong:
"For instance, after this problem appears, I can no longer click on "Open new tab" button in Firefox (it opens the Clock/Calendar indicator instead if I have more tabs open in Firefox and the "Open new tab" button is bellow the clock indicator)."

The corrected statement:
When this bug appears, the registered click is somewhere bellow and to the right, compared to the displayed mouse cursor position (not above, like I said in my previous comment).

So , if I want to click on something, I must place the mouse above and to the left of the intended mouse click target.

Also have this bug, took me a while to find this bug description here (searched for "mouse focus off" previously), which is probably the reason why it seems that it does not affect that many people.

As mentioned in the similar bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/1309290 I can (almost) always recreate the bug if I minimize a window and click on the launcher icon again. Then the focus and mouse pointer are off as described by others (interestingly also "somewhere below and to the right").

Happens with Firefox, Chromium, Thunderbird, file explorer, ...

Workaround: as I usually see no menu bar - grab the window (to un-maximize it) and throw it to the top again to maximize again. Then the behaviour is back to normal in this very window.

If I have one Hot Corner activated (right bottom edge for "show desktop") and the mentioned "Show live previews of windows" in Compiz Manager deactivated (otherwise the hot corner does not work), bug occurs. If I deactive this hot corner (none else activated) and check the show-live-previews (to activate it), the bug seems to be gone (although, with this option checked hot corners do not seem to work on my system...)

Should not be an Nvidia problem as I have AMD and an on-board Radeon GPU.

I have the strong feeling that this bug is related to graphic-driver issues, although it seems to occur in different systems.... has anybody tried other drivers than the ones that come installed with the system?

Update on my comment:
Another Hot Corner is still active (Scale), and I could also active the Hot Corner to show the desktop without the bug occuring again. However, the show-desktop option only works once, if I want it permanent I would have to deactivate the "show live previews..." option, which brings back this very bug and lets Hotcorner-"Scale" sometimes crash...

I would really appreciate if somebody could look into this :)

I can confirm that this bug is not limited to computers with Nvidia graphic cards. This computer only has Intel integrated graphics (Sandy Bridge Celeron G550/ Intel HD Graphics).

I kept "Show live previews of windows in the Switcher" disabled (see my comments #12 and #13) and since then never encountered this bug again.

Is it possible that this bug is originating from Unity Tweak Tool Switcher tab?

It seems that only thing I need to do to reproduce this bug is to tab into "Show Desktop" back and forth from full screen Firefox and cursor is misplaced. And at least one way to fix it is to disable/enable "Switch between minimized windows" in Unity Tweak Tool Switcher tab.

I have the same problem but sadly both "Switch between minimized windows" in the Tweak Tool and "Show live previews of windows in the Switcher"in CompizConfig are disabled already so this will not work for me.

I get the problem when minimizing a full screen window and then restoring it. Problem is there in google chrome and mozilla thunderbird at least. Switching to windowed mode and back to fullscreen solves the problem for the moment being... but it is very annoying.

I removed the tweak tool again to see whether this will fix it for me. Sadly the answer so far is: Nope. Maybe after rebooting my computer...

I have the same problem on Ubuntu 14.10. I also had a lot of trouble finding it and searched for "show desktop hot corner mouse pointer ubuntu" to find this thread.

It happens to me every time I use a hotcorner for 'show desktop' with the unity tweak tool. this never used to happen to me on 13.10 so it's really annoying! I can restore the pointer to the right configuration by hitting my other hotcorner with 'spread windows'. My configuration is as Christoph's is as well so any further suggestions on how to fix this would be great!

I noticed that this happened when I have the option "Switch between minimized windows" off from the Unity Tweak Tool --> Switcher Tab. It seems to not happen now that I turned that on again.

I experienced this problem mostly on Chrome, but I guess it would happen for other windows also.

The reason I had the option disabled is that it was a way to make the "show desktop" hotcorner work. It doesn't work now but I prefer this from missing the cursor.

melitz (budhaspirit) wrote :

I agree with Vasilis' notice above. I've first noticed it on Firefox and Thunderbird buts it happens for all windows.

When that option is enabled all is working well. But the reason I've disabled it is that I don't want to see all the application in the Switch beacuse most of them runs in the background and they don't have top-panel tray icons.

I had the same problem for a while and I've recently found out, that it came from disabling the Unity/Switcher setting to show live previews of the window. This is necessary for (at least some) nVidia users to keep minimizing windows from getting black. However, enabling the Workarounds plugin and activating "Keep previews for minimized windows" solves this problem entirely.
Hope this helps.
