also, the light on the mute button is supposed to turn blue when the volume is unmuted, and although the mute icon on the screen appears and mutes or unmutes, the button light alwaystays orange

Same problem. Something that may help for resolving the bug : there was no problem with the sound when using the Live CD (Ubuntu 7.04 i386) on this computer, but the sound disappeared at the first boot on the installed Ubuntu.

I tried the alsa 1.0.15rc2, and this version fix all the audio output for me (with many channels). But the microfone (and the line in) gets only noise.
For now, I'm using this kernel modules.

I don't know if this will get to gutsy.

With Ubuntu 7.04 the sound worked fine on my dv6543 after I re-compiled to the latest alsa driver. On Ubuntu 7.10 tribe 4 I managed to get the sound working with the attached patch, but with the 7.10 beta this patch did not work.

This will probably be fixed after the release of gutsy as an update

You can monitor by yourself when an update of ALSA will be release by watching the ubuntu-gutsy backports module git tree:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=ubuntu/ubuntu-gutsy-lbm.git;a=summary
An initial upload of ALSA has just be done. Let's hope...
