I can't seem to reproduce the bug when installing postgresql in Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS amd64. I am using the Quantal (3.5.0-44) kernal however.

This just says "The PostgreSQL server failed to start. Please check the log output."; can you please attach /var/log/postgresql-9.1-main.log ?

It seems you accidentally removed localhost from /etc/hosts then. Please add back a line like

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost

Do you have the "loopback" network interface up? Please check that "ip a show dev lo" shows 127.0.0.1. Thanks!
