Bug Description

I am using HP "all in one" with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS installed. Following the last update, my wireless network connection is lost. I have both wired and wireless connection if I boot with older version 3.2.032, but with new version 3.2.055 after update I only have wired connection, but no wireless connection.

I have 2 versions on my front logon screen.

One is linux 3.2.055 and the other is 3.2.032 The default is 3.2.055 on boot up I can get a wired connection but no wireless connection. If I boot on 3.2.032 I can get both a wired, and wireless connection.

Many thanks for any help.......(New to Ubuntu)

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1248485/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

Hello Joseph,

I am a user of Ubuntu only, I do not understand these linux commands .
The Ubuntu software on my HP all in ONE works perfectly when I connect
to the Internet, the problem is not the software once connected
....the problem is after doing updates, the wireless connection is lost,
 and cant be regained.

John, is there some reason you can't run the apport-collect command requested in comment #3? That will add data to the bug that really is needed for us to help you. If at all possible please run it when booted into the kernel which produces the wireless problems (you'll need to use the wired connection). Thanks!

No, for some reason it's crashing and not attaching the data. Until we can get that working can you boot into the kernel with broken wifi and run these commands in a terminal:

lspci -vvnn > lspci.txt
dmesg > dmesg.txt

This will produce two files, lspci.txt and dmesg.txt. Please attach these files to this bug report.

In the bug description you say "if I boot with ..." I mean the same thing you mean there -- boot with the kernel which has broken wifi.

You added a space between "-" and "vvnn" in the lspci command I gave you. Please enter the commands exactly as I supplied (copy/paste works well for this).

I'm not interested in the output you see on the screen from these commands. If they are successful they will produce no output. What they will produce are files named lspci.txt and dmesg.txt in the directory where you ran the commands. After running the commands, I need for you to return to this page and click the "Add attachment or patch" link (at the bottom of the page), then click "Choose File" on the new page which loads. Use the file browser to locate dmesg.txt, then click "Open" to return you to the web page, then click "Post Comment". Then repeat this process for lspci.txt.

The wireless device listed in lspci hasn't ever been supported in version 3.2 kernels. Support wasn't added until version 3.5. But in that case 3.2.0-32 shouldn't work either, so there must be some missing information. Are you using the machine's built-in wireless or something like a USB wireless dongle? Did you install any additional software to get the wireless working originally?

Could you boot with the 3.2.0-32 kernel, then collect and attach dmesg.txt as you did before? Please also provide the output of running "lsmod" in a terminal.

I can come up with no explanation why it would have been working before. That kernel doesn't have support for your wireless hardware.

You've got a few options for getting it working. Probably the easiest is to install the backports drivers. For this you need to install the linux-backports-modules-cw-3.8-precise-generic package, either using the software center or by running "sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-cw-3.8-precise-generic" in a terminal. You'll need to reboot after doing this.

The other options are either to upgrade to a newer release or use our hardware enablement stack. Let me know if you want instructions for either of these.

It doesn't seem necessary to add support to Linux 3.2 since we already have a couple of options for getting your hardware working in 12.04, so I'm changing the status to Won't Fix.

You said you hadn't installed any additional software to get your
wireless working, but this says otherwise. You had installed some other
driver for your wireless, but it has stopped working. You should remove
this module using the following command:

  sudo dpkg --purge oem-wireless-rt2x00-1044172-dkms

Then try installing the backports package again.

I can assure you I have not installed any additional software, it can only have

This is the update that failed and started the problem.
oem-wireless-rt2x00-1044172 driver in DKMS format.
OEM-Wireless-rt2x00-1044172-dkms (Size : 6.0mb)

This was listed under other updates.

I have now purged this file and reinstalled the backports package
and guess what ITS WORKING!!!!!!

My final question is, do I continue to install updates or am I likely to get the same
problem?

It's critical that you continue to install updates, otherwise you will not receive fixes for security issues. Updates will not install new packages like the one that was causing you problems.

As for the oem-wireless-rt2x00-1044172 package, I have no idea where you got that package from. I don't see it in the Ubuntu archives, so it wouldn't have been installed automatically. Wherever it came from, now that it is removed it should not cause you any more problems.

I had the same issue with an HP 655.
the oem-wireless-rt2x00-1044172 package is part of the HP OEM installation (12.04.2), this explains why it is there even if the user ddn't install it.
I have solved the problem by installing regular ubuntu 12.04.3 with the linux-current-generic kernel.

however also the Ralink corp. RT3290 Bluetooth driver is missing
