Bug Description

This is my first or second update after a (very smooth!) upgrade to Kubuntu 13.10. The updates icon appeared in the System Tray, I clicked and the new muon-updater appeared, offering ~90MB of updates. When I clicked to install I got the common prompt about additional packages (kernel ones in this case), I confirmed that.

It started downloading. The window looked a little strange (see attached screenshot), the items in the [More...v] menu were grayed out, but it seemed OK so I went back to playing GTA V :)

Many hours and deaths later I returned to find the updater window looked more or less unchanged (see attached), it's at "Loading Software List" which is I think where it was hours before. No progress indicated. According to `ps -alx -w -w` the muon-updaer process is stuck in

  F UID PID PPID PRI NI VSZ RSS WCHAN STAT TTY TIME COMMAND
  1 1000 19828 1649 20 0 783196 93216 poll_s Sl ? 10:30 /usr/bin/muon-updater

 I ran `sudo strace -p` and it's occasionally reading and writing to fd 3 and stuck on recvfrom 7 (a socket). I'll attach the strace. The fds are:
  % sudo ls -l /proc/19828/fd/[37]
  lrwx------ 1 skierpage skierpage 64 Oct 26 04:39 /proc/19828/fd/3 -> anon_inode:[eventfd]
  lrwx------ 1 skierpage skierpage 64 Oct 26 04:39 /proc/19828/fd/7 -> socket:[1770872]

But it looks like the update actually did complete. /var/log/dpkg.log has a bunch of "status installed" packages from an hour or so after I started the update, the last one is
  2013-10-26 04:41:23 status installed initramfs-tools:all 0.103ubuntu1.1
and there's a yellow [^o] "A System Restart is required" icon is in the system tray. So I think the update did complete OK, muon-updater just isn't showing it. I clicked the yellow restart icon and nothing happened.

When updates are available, the notification icon appears correctly. But running the updater always reports "The software on this computer is up to date" with no updates listed. The updates can be found and installed using muon package manager, but never using the updater.

Running from the command line show the following errors:

QDBusConnection: session D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave.
JSonScanner::yylex - error reading from io device

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Run muon-updater when updates are available (either from the notification or directly)
Actual Results:
No updates listed

Expected Results:
List available updates

Refreshing the updater shows waiting icon for several seconds, but still lists no updates

I can confirm, this behaviour started after upgrading to Kubuntu 13.10.

The notification icon appears but when you click on it the updater reports "The software on this computer is up to date" with no updates listed.

However if you check for updates using apt-get or muon package manager both will identify and install the updates.

This is probably a duplicate of 326256

I see the above messages when running muon-updater from Konsole. Also, when clicking More... and Check for Updates, this CLI message is issued:

found error while replying QDBusError("org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.InvalidArgs", "")

Nothing happens after that.

I've been applying updates manually after muon-updater failed.

Today after clicking "Install Updates", Muon displayed "Loading Software List" with a progress bar, but stalled at 33%. I was unable to quit from Muon, so killed it. I then found that Muon had, in fact, applied the updates.

I am having the same problem. The updates are installed fine, as far as I can tell, but it hangs saying "Loading Software List" after the update is applied. If I try and log off, I get a message "Logout cancelled by /usr/bin/muon-updater" in the systray. Running "sudo shutdown now" from a terminal manages to close it though.

Muon packages have been upgraded, from 2.0.65+git20131008-0ubuntu4 to 2.1.0-0ubuntu0.1, so hopefully this bug is now fixed. I can't find any details on Launchpad, though.

Agree, I now have 2.1.0-0ubuntu0.1 and the problem is unchanged. Updater says system is up to date, but package manager and notifier both correctly show available updates.

No updates are listed, but the "Install Updates" button become available after a while and updates can be installed.

I have also had this same "Loading Software List" hang
However this is not an upgrade but a completely clean Kubuntu 13.10 install just now on a brand new drive.

During install I ticked mp3 software download, and download updates during install & whole disk with lvm.

A bog standard install almost.

First boot / login into KDE system and clicking on the gear / available updates that appeared and "Install Updates" button.

Some activity and then "Loading Software List" with blue marker perpetually moving back and forth.

last line in /var/log/dpkg.log is:-

status installed initramfs-tools:all 0.103ubuntu1

Shutdown via KDE and same "logout cancelled by muon-updater" as also reported previously.

Ended process muon-updater via System Monitor and then Shutdown via KDE menu - Searching for Additional Drivers dialog popped up momentarily during KDE / system shutdown.

Hope this helps as its an almost instant failure of Kubuntu upon clean install on clean hardware.

Same here: gear icon appearing on the systray, hovering above with the mouse the pop-up appears saying there are updates, clicking on it brings up the muon-updater window that invariably says "The software on this computer is up to date".

So, muon-notifier works OK, but muon-updater fails.

A few pointers:
- Running muon-updater from the command line I get two "JSonScanner::yylex - error reading from io device" errors;
- The muon-updater window also says "Last checked X minutes and Y seconds ago", so looks like it's not really checking when called;
- Selecting "More..." and "Check for updates", I get at first this:

found error while replying QDBusError("org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.InvalidArgs", "")

then on subsequent repeats I get:

found error while replying QDBusError("org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply", "Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.")

At the moment I'm using muon-notifier only as "the canary in the trench", then running Muon Package Manager, filtering by "Status"-"Upgradeable" and applying the upgrades from there.

Worryingly, there are now four security upgrades pending that muon-updater should apply automatically - as per my settings - as soon as they're released, but obviously now it doesn't.

It's then a high priority security issue somebody should look into with the utmost urgency.

I noticed that even though the muon window is opened and the progres bar is bouncing, you can after a while from the CLI to update and upgrade, so the package database is freed at some point but the muon window doesn't close. My 2 cents.

Apparently there are two bugs being tracked here -- someone merged in a different report, of the bug:
<< Bug 326367 - Always says no updates available, even when there are updates >> and many of the replies
above saying "me too - I have the bug too" are ambiguous as to whether they are seeing "no updates"
even when there are updates, or are seeing "freezing at 33% Loading Software List". The "Invalid"
indicator apparently applies to the merged in Bug 326367.

The merge of these two bug reports was a mistake, in my less than humble view :).

The original bug description is very clear and different from bug 326367.
If someone knows better about having merge the two bugs maybe they should say so to clarify the issue.
The bug affects me as well after a clean install of Kubuntu 13.10 64 bits.
The updates do take place but the Muon window cannot be shutdown (hangs at "Loading Software List" and I end up using xkill to get rid of it.
Not sure where the 33% value comes from though? Not seeing any percentage of progress and the updates do take place.

I've notice a small improvement in that the hanging is not as much, however, I got one recently the beginning of the week and it was for first 7 updates pending which loaded in fine. The next was a notice of 4 more and it then was lost in the loading of the list which required the eventual ending the process and manually updating from the Package Manger. Next was another bunch, I forget how many, and it hung up and required the End procedure.

 Hi there!

Thanks for reporting this bug! Your bug seems to be a problem with the KDE program itself, and not with our KDE packages. While we appreciate your issue, it would be better if it was tracked at https://bugs.kde.org, so that the KDE developers can deal with this speedily and have direct communication with you as the reporter for more effective debugging.

Thanks!
