Bug Description

In LibreOffice 4.1.2.3 open a document suspend, then resume. Scroll mouse down in LibreOffice (or try page up/down). Sluggish behavior, high CPU usage, takes half a second to a second on a good machine to execute command (vs. almost immediately normally).

This occurs with nvidia-graphics-drivers-304-updates, 319 and 319-updates.

With Nouveau I cannot wake up from suspend.

WORKAROUND: The problem is resolved if libreoffice is completely closed and re-opened after the resume.

Hi Christopher. I updated the bios to the latest version, as per your instructions.
I tested for the bug again, and it is still there.

David, does this problem not occur with the updates driver via https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-304-updates ?

Yes, and it also occurs with 319 and 319-updates.

Unfortunately, under Nouveau I cannot wake up from suspend (a Nouveau bug/incompatibility with my hardware) and hence cannot test for our specific LibreOffice bug. Upon trying to wake up from suspend, I only get a black screen out of which nothing works other than killing the laptop.

Nouveau packages were:
nouveau-firmware (version 20091212-0ubuntu1)
xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (version :1.0.9-2ubuntu1)
xserver-xorg-video-nouveau-dbg (version 1:1.0.9-2ubuntu1)
libdrm-nouveau2:i386 (version 2.4.46-1)
libdrm-nouveau2 (version 2.4.46-1)
libdrm-nouveau2-dbg (version 2.4.46-1)

Sorry about that setback

David, with the nvidia drivers, could you please capture the missing details following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend? You may want to skip the mainline kernel request part as this would be assuming your aren't using nvidia/proprietary drivers.

The following dmesg was generated with nvidia drivers, and with a suspend/resume sequence without libreoffice open.
(by following the two command lines as per the link you pasted:
sudo sh -c "sync && echo 1 > /sys/power/pm_trace && pm-suspend"
dmesg > dmesg.txt)

Now the attached dmesg was generated with nvidia drivers still, and with a suspend/resume sequence WITH libreoffice open during suspend/resume.

David one should see on the Desktop a file called wakeup if one does:

Before 11.04, I personally couldn't tell because I had a different laptop computer then.

However, this bug has been around a while.
In the following duplicate (exact same behavior, with nvidia drivers & openoffice) https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/606558 it was reported under 10.04.

Even older, in this duplicate (same exact behavior with nvidia drivers & openoffice) https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-180/+bug/185600, the bug was first reported in January 2008, under what I would guess was Ubuntu 7.10. It was then confirmed in 8.04, and followed us through up to now in 13.04...

David, those reports mentioned are not considered duplicates at this time, as 606558 has no hardware information and only tests to OOo (which isn't supported), and 185600 is Fix Released.

Regarding reproducibility before Natty, the interest is only for you personally with the hardware you reported against originally in this report.

Regarding nouveau, you are welcome to file a separate report to have this investigated and addressed via a terminal:
ubuntu-bug linux

It's a lot easier to get support for nouveau as it's open source, while support for the nvidia drivers is restricted to driver specialist employees of Canonical and nvidia.

Despite this, in order to test the latest kernel with nvidia, could you please test for this in Trusty via http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ and advise to the results?

Hi Christopher.

While both bugs might not be duplicates from a bug reporting standpoint, I'm most certain they are the exact same issue.
As for bug 185600, it was *incorrectly* marked "Fix Release". If you go to it, you'll notice it was marked such after comment 71, yet comment 74 recants comment 71 but the fix release mention was incorrectly left there. It is clear from all comments following that a fix has never been found.

I understand your comments regarding nouveau vs. proprietary nvidia drivers.

Will test with daily and advise you on the results,

David
