LDAP fails. Says it can't find the server, but the server is there and spelled correctly. Works in Windows. Problem is probably with the authentifiaction.

Bug Description
Binary package hint: evolution
Our server is mail.jaars.org
for ID we have to use our whole email address.
e.g. <email address hidden>
The domain is NOT mail.jaars.org. The domain is sil.org.
We use SSL. Authentification is DN. Port 636.
Evolution never asks for a password but simply says the server is spelled wrong or not available.
Our whole organization of 7000 can't use this feature with Evolution because of this problem.

Hi Sebastien,
I am using Ubuntu Feisty Fawn. However LDAP hasn't worked on any of the
Ubuntu versions we use.
I will get you a bug log first chance.

LDAP was causing me heaps of problems, but the Bug is not specific to Ubuntu. It appears that a plugin in Evolution (installed by default) is at fault. It is highly likely that your LDAP settings are fine, you just need to disable the Exchange Operations plugin. To do this, click Edit, then Plugins, and then unmark the Exchange Operations plugin. Exit, and restart Evolution.

I am trying to connect to a scheduleworld LDAP server.
server: ldap.schedulewo
Port: 389
No encryption
Using distinguished name
Login: uid=xxxxx,
If I try to find search bases on the details tab, I get Failed to Authenticate
I get no prompt for my password. So the message is not surprising.
I have removed the exchange add in.
I can access the database using ldapsearch
ldapsearch -H ldap://
If I run the data server and evolution from the console I see the following.

John, have you tried disabling the exchange plugin from the main menu
of Evolution. I found this was the problem on my install.

Ditto. Is it reasonable for me to expect some kind of timely resolution? :)

Remember that sometimes DNS is not properly setup. In my organization the computer dept has a mixed setup of resolving IP addresses via DNS and via SMB/NETBIOS/WINS or something samba-related.
I had this exact problem until I tried to ping the address book server from my linux machine, telling me it couldn't be found. From a windows machine it was found. One of the internal webservers are "set up" the same way - only "windows-
Solutions:
a) Setting up samba and make it resolve addresses for you might help the situation. If this works it's probably "best" because it mimics whatever windows does, and in my case the computer department mostly think windowsy.
b) or, you could add the address book server IP address to /etc/hosts, like I did and it works like a charm. If you go to Evolution Prefecences, the exchange account and under Receiving options find global catalog server name to be nooslse002.
127.0.0.1 localhost
32.8.8.70 nooslse002 nooslse002.
Bob should now be your uncle. He was in my case; I didn't get the "LDAP authentication failed" and when I composed a new message, the lookup effectively worked. This will break when computer department changes the IP of the global addressbook server. They probably won't, but we're aware of Murphy's law.
To developers: Maybe something could be done already in the settings window, like to see if the server can be contacted at all?

Okay, looks like evolution (2.24.1) is in the clear. We have had a
close look at our LDAP server and the problem we were having lies
there; *not* with evolution. Having resolved the LDAP server issues,
LDAP name lookup in evolution is now running fine. Thanks for your
help and sorry to have led you astray.

I had no luck. It did ask for the password unlike before, but after that it claimed varous things, like no TLS, which I wasn't using. I was using SSL It claimed an authentication error. It never allowed me to enter the password a second time. I tried various ways of logging in.
I have tried on the live 32 bit CD and my currently installed 64 bit 8.10.
I have no control over the LDAP server.

I should add that we can't get it working using SSL/TLS we determined
that was a problem with our LDAP as well. in other words, i can't
confirm evolution is working accessing an LDAP server using SSL/TLS

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Thanks in advance.
Hi there, it turns out that our LDAP install was screwy. It's now
working all ok and evolution has a clean bill of health!
Thankyou for getting back to me!! :)
kind regards, jules

If this still effects anyone, the solution for me was to edit /etc/ldap/ldap.conf and add the line:
TLS_REQCERT never
(You probably then need to restart Evolution.)
Thank you for your bug. What version of Ubuntu do you use? Could you try getting a debug log as described on http:// www.gnome. org/projects/ evolution/ bugs.shtml?
