Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

Desktop Effects was on, tried to turn it off but the button always indicated it was off so I clicked the turn on again regardless. It did turn them off and crashed out.

Thank you for the bug report. Also, please answer these questions:

* Is this crash reproducible?
* If so, which are the steps that lead to it?

This will greatly aid us in tracking down your problem.

I had exactly the same issue, desktop effects was enabled after installing the nvidia-glx driver and restarting X. Clicking 'enable desktop effects' caused the above error, but i am unable to reproduce, clicking the button again disables / enables desktop effects fine and does not error anymore.

I too have had this error, this is now the third repeat of the same issue, I have an ATI Radeon 9800, using the open source drivers, compiz works normally, but with the gnome-compiz-manager trying to enable the desktop effects it throws up two boxes of 'keep previous settings' and then proceeds to throw up the crash report.

It happens to me too, on an Intel video card. It happened when I tried to "restart" compiz with "compiz --replace" (it was working OK, just wanted to reload some settings), then when I tried the same thing using the "Desktop Effects" applet.

Me too - turned on and off Desktop Effects, then back on again to see difference. Went to close the window but then it crashed out. Intel card. HP Pavilion zt3000 laptop. But the desktop effects are still working. Im still a relative newb and feel if it aint broke dont fix it and if its just a little bit broke let the experts fix it so i hope u dont mind if i do not try to break it again :-p Thanks guys for workin so hard to make a great product. I dont have much money so Ubuntu is a great product and I am very thankful for you folks.

PS - Now note I was using Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 1 - a few days ago, maybe even yesterday, I did a bunch of updates so Im not sure if Im on Tribe 2 or not. I believe my type of card is "ATI Radeon" and/or "nvidia"

Your video card will be listed there, likely as an AGP, PCI, or PCIe, or other "slot" type device.

The indication from the button (pressed/not pressed) is working for me (now showing pressed).

I had this bug today after installing the Nvidia 100.14.11 driver. I rebooted and the resolution of gdm and my desktop was set to 1024x768, while it should be 1280x1024. I then noticed that some new effects were in place and I then looked at the desktop effects tab of the appearance window. Desktop effects were enabled and when clicking to disable my computer crashed. Got totally no response, ctrl+alt+backspace did not work anymore. After a hard reset I logged in again and apport indicated a problem, the same as described above. I have all updates since 07-23-2007 installed, so the bug is still present.

Your system lockup is caused by the 100.14.11 driver. It's horribly broken.

Oh really? I didn't even examine the logs enough to have even thought of

I was talking to Jeroen but if you have the 100.14.11 driver and have a compiz crash lock your whole system then the driver is to blame for the system lockup. This crash appears to have something to do with session management and the ccp plugin.

Interesting. Any signs of the problem with Beryl? And as far as Compiz
is concerned, is it applicable to not just the origonal Compiz releases
but Compiz-Fusion as well? Thanks again!

Compiz Fusion is just some addons for compiz, that question doesn't make sense.

Nightwing (deadmatrix) wrote :

No it doesn't make sense to me either when you put it that way. I was
always under the impression that Compiz-Fusion was the output of Compiz
and Beryl's merger in a early alpha form. Quite interesting to learn
other wise. Thanks for setting the record straight for me!

It didn't occur to me that I was litterally commenting back to the bug itself. I guess I ended up subscribed somehow and got a seperate email with the bugs in the newest Nvidia driver and thought it was a personal email, and I replied as just that with Thunderbird2, LOL, Talk about a blonde moment. Sorry for the confusion on my part. Feel free to remove this and my other posts if they are found as irrelevent. It's all good either way.

I am having this occur when I merely start up Gutsy Tribe 3. I installed it from the latest cd available at ubuntu website via torrent. Then last night there were like more 60 some updates. I don't know if that did something to screw up what I mention below. The compiz thing has been NOT starting right from the get go.

ALso what was very weird about this is that none of my gnome-panels appeared at all. I could do an alt-f2, then enter sudo killall gnome-panel and then they finally appeared. Here is dmesg and syslog if that helps.
