Binary package hint: compiz
Hi,
Metacity used to resize big windows so they would fit on the screen, like this:

However, Compiz doesn't seem to do so:

See how the status bar is hidden behind the panel. Some other times even part of the titlebar has appeared offscreen.

Compiz doesn't understand that the gnome panels aren't useable space, so windows resize to fit the whole screen including the panels.
