cannot burn cd's

Bug Description

I try to burn cd's using both Nautilus and GnomeBaker. Neither works. Nautilus says the burn speed is too fast, but will not let me adjust burn speed down. GnomeBaker just says failed to burn. Both detect the cd burner (DVD C DS24CZP on a Acer 2680 laptop). Not sure what is wrong.

Hi, thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping make Ubuntu better.

Could you please tell us the make and model of your CD drive, you will be able to find it by opening the hardware information tool from the preferences section of the system menu.

Could you also tell us if you have tried more than one brand of CD.

As far as I can tell, the name is DVD C DS24CZP on a
Acer 2680 laptop. I don't really know what all the bus
stuff means. I have tried Dynex CD-R, which don't
work. They work fine in my other computer.

Could you please try burning a disc using Brasero? Thanks.

Brasero is not in Synaptic or Add/Remove, so I can't
try it. I think it's to do with this computer, as I
burned CD's with another computer using Feisty with no
problems. I assume the CD Burner is not in the Linux
setup somehow. I've had numerous other problems with
Feisty and this acer as3680, as Feisty did not detect
my screen resolution correctly and the audio did not
work correctly.

I installed brasero, and it appeared to work fine at

...also, could you list the text for the email you are
responding to, so I know which one you're referring

I'm including screenshots of my DVD Hardware configuration. Not sure if this will help.

Not sure if I had mentioned that I can play CD's and DVD's, I just cannot burn anything. I tried Brasero, Nautilus, Gnomebaker, with no luck. None of the three will let me adjust burn speed, and both Nautilus and Brasero said burn speed was too high.

Umm, I managed to fix the sound problem on my own. Though I'm curious why Ubuntu has Surround Sounded muted by default, as this was the problem. It's also hidden when you check the sound parameters by the speaker on the task bar. I had to find it using preferences.

ooking over the Hardware, it does have storage.cdrom.write_speed listed as int 0 (0x0). Not sure why, and not sure how to fix this. storage.cdrom.write_speeds has str "". storage.physical_device has string /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/pci_8086_27c4_scsi_device_lunO_O

Unfortunately for me the problem is not solved in Hardy Heron. I tried both Brasero and gnomebaker.
I have Hardy Heron installed (Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, server ed. 64 bits)

When I run Brasero the Status field displays: "the medium is not writable with the current set of plugins".

With Gnomebaker the Create Dat CD does not display any devices in the Writer list. When Burn is pressed I get repeatedly the message "Please insert a disk into ASUS DVD-E818AT" and finally "Burning failed".

Anything basic I am missing? Any suggestions? Thanks.

Sorry, disregard my previous message. The problem is in the type of drive not in the burning software (this ASUS drive just doesn't support DVD burning!).

I have the same problem. Have tried Gnomebaker, K3B, Brasero and wodim directly from command line.

Since upgrading to 8.04 (I now run 8.10), I can't burn anything.

What information would be helpful with my confirmation of this report - and (sorry) how can I get that info?

I was on Jaunty Jackalope (and previous releases), and was burning CDs and DVDs fine. Then somewhere around 2 weeks ago, my cd burning stopped working, but the DVD burning would still work. I then upgraded to Karmic Koala, and same problem persists. I do all burning through K3B.

For burning CDs, the CD will spin up, and spin down several times. the software or hardware buffer never seems to get used, the burners never seem to start writing.

On doing an incremental burn, I got the error "mkisofs crashed. cdrecord has no permission to open the device. You may use K3Bsetup to solve this problem". I looked at K3B setup, and it seemed ok. It appeared that all the CD record and programs used were checked off for use.

Other errors were something like "OPC Failed. It probably doesnt like the media". I tried different CD media and no luck.

or "No permission to write to device".

I checked permissions on the devices and they seemed fine. It is possible the hardware burner is failing, but it seems to be specifically related to programs called by K3B that burn CDs. (?) All DVD burning (except incremental) works as advertised.

Thanks to all.

Follow up: My DVD burner is " DVD A DH20A4P".

I found in the system settings, a "K3B setup". I opened this and found that there are some options I may need to try, that possibly got unset at some point (although I know I didnt manually do this).

in system settings, under K3B setup, under devices, there is a checkbox for changing permissions on the device, and also for these external programs, "cdrdoa and cdrecord". Permissions for these programs is now 0755 root root, with an option (it looks like) to set new permissions to 4711. (I'm not sure what 4771 permission means, "Symbol in the position 0 ("-")is the type of the file. It is either "d" if the item is a directory, or "l" if it is a link, or "-" if the item is a regular file.")

the Listed groisofs program has 0755 root root, but there is no checkbox to change it, and and in the "new permissions" column, there is "no change". I presume this to mean that one cant change growisofs in the setup.

I am on a remote session so I cant test these changes currently.
