Bug Description

I am new to linux (2 months experience?) so please forgive me if this seems wrong. I'm not even sure this is considered a bug?

Brief description of the problem:

I have a Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-USB2 personal video recorder. If I connect the device for the first time and type:

mplayer -framedrop -tv channel=4 /dev/video0

...then it works surprisingly well. If I close the window and unplug/reconnect the device, hibernate, standby, shutdown or reboot then, 99% of the time, it simply stops working. The only solution I could find is this command:

sudo apt-get --assume-yes remove mythtv mythtv-database mysql-server mysql-server-5.0 mythtv-frontend mythtv-backend mythtv-common mythtv-common mysql-client mysql-client-5.0 && sleep 3 && sudo apt-get --assume-yes install mythtv mythtv-database mysql-server mysql-server-5.0 mythtv-frontend mythtv-backend mythtv-common mythtv-common mysql-client mysql-client-5.0 && sleep 10 && mplayer -framedrop -tv channel=4 /dev/video0

If I uninstall all of these packages then install all of these packages then launch mplayer then it will work again. Of course unplugging/reconnecting the device, hibernate, shutting down or rebooting will usually cause the problem to reappear.

I should also note uninstalling/reinstalling these packages individually will not resolve the problem. I have to uninstall and reinstall the entire group of packages for this fix to be successful.

I'm including some information below hoping maybe someone has a solution.

My dmesg output will be last because its so long.

:-( next time please post your dmesg logs as a file.

I have a pvrusb2 as well and when I hibernate it just doesn't wake up, and I lent it to a friend who had the same issue on his computer(s?) so this issue has been reproduced.

Is this bug possibly related to Bug 105563 in hal (Ubuntu)? Because the USB just doesn't wake up a lot of the times.

Bug 118978 has regular old tuners. I think the problem here is that Ubuntu just sucks at waking things up from hibernate. period. And that really needs to be addressed.

Sorry about the posting format. I'll keep that in mind next time! I could
have swore that I truncated it.

I did read a conversation between some of the kernel developers regarding
this particular piece of hardware. Unfortunately Hauppauge provides very
little documentation which makes troubleshooting from a developer standpoint
very difficult. At least I can watch TV on it which works for me. If they
fix it in the future then that would be great!

I still don't understand how uninstalling/reinstalling the apps would affect
USB's decision to wake-up the device? but who knows.. Stranger things
have happened.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

The pvrusb2 DON'T work in linux-2.6.27 (Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Alpha5), see Bug #262927 <https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/262927>, but still no help!

Hi BanjoBoy,

Can you comment, which specific kernel you are running e.g. attach the output of 'cat /proc/version_signature' . The bugs you reference seem to have had a fix applied. Thanks.
