Bug Description

Several times, when I boot my Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS (Precise Pangolin) 64-bit installation, I get a kernel panic during the boot. When that happens, I have to power the machine down and power it up again. Sometimes, the kernel panic happens several times in a row, until the machine finally boots.

The hardware is a "HP Pavilion dv6" laptop, running in Dual-Boot with Windows 7 Home Premium (also 64-bit).

I have all Updates installed to this date (15-aug-2013), including the kernel updates: the running kernel is 3.5.0-37

Here's the output from uname -a :

$ Linux [hostname] 3.5.0-37-generic #58~precise1-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 10 17:48:11 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

The last message of the kernel panic is almost always the following:

"Kernel Panic - Not syncing : Fatal Exception in Interrupt"

Sometimes, there's a message below that stating:

"Shutting down cpus with NMI"

The messages above the "Kernel Panic" message are usually different each time. I have photographed several of the "Kernel Panic" screens and I can attach some of them to this Bug Report, if that's useful.

In case it's relevant, my partition setup for this Ubuntu installation is the following:

1 - a "/boot" partition (formatted as ext3)
2 - a swap partition
3 - a "/" partition (formatted as ext4), with encrypted home folder.

Please tell me if I should add any information to this bug report.

Thanks in advance.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.11 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Also, it would be very helpful if you could attach some of the images you've captured of the panic.

@jsalisbury: Thanks for replying. Regarding testing kernels from the 3.11 line, I will only be able to try doing that in a few days.

Meanwhile, I'm attaching now a photograph of the latest kernel panic, that happened today (Fri, 16-aug-2013), at around 14H00 (Lisbon Time). The photo has a bit more reflexion than I thought it had (sorry about that).

@jsalisbury: Hello again. I did not yet try the latest upstream kernel (of the 3.11 series), but I got another kernel panic this evening (Sun, 18-aug-2013), at around 1H00 am (Lisbon time), using the same kernel that I mentioned, when I opened this bug report (3.5.0-37-generic 64-bit).

Thankfully, this time the kernel panic is more informative: it points to the likely culprit!

As you can see, in the attached photo of this new kernel panic, there's a message line referring the "Broadcom BCM4357 802.11 Hybrid Wireless Controller", namely the following line ("eth1" is my wireless/wi-fi port):

[ 24.209511] eth1: Broadcom BCM4357 802.11 Hybrid Wireless Controller 6.20.155.1 (r326264)

With this additional information - that leads to believe that the problem lies with the Broadcom wi-fi controller / driver - do you think that I should still test the latest upstream kernel -OR- should I try something else?

Thanks again.

I'm afraid this kernel panic happened today (14-oct-2013) again with my current kernel (3.5.0-41-generic #64~precise1-Ubuntu SMP) .

As suggested, I also tried to install the latest Mainline kernel - following the instructions found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds?action=show&redirect=KernelMainlineBuilds - with the kernel available at http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.12-rc5-saucy/ namely with the files "linux-headers-3.12.0-031200rc5-generic_3.12.0-031200rc5.201310131952_amd64.deb" and "linux-image-3.12.0-031200rc5-generic_3.12.0-031200rc5.201310131952_amd64.deb" but I got the following errors when running "sudo dpkg -i *.deb":

--------------------
[...]
Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 3.12.0-031200rc5-generic (x86_64)
Consult /var/lib/dkms/nvidia-304-updates/304.88/build/make.log for more information.

So, I'll add now the tag "kernel-unable-to-test-upstream" to this bug. Any further instruction and/or comment will be much appreciated.

If this helps:

I have tried many linux dists, mint, kali, debian, fedora and I get the same kernel panic.

In the past I never had this problem with debian 6 and kernel 2.6.

Good news

the problem seems to be solved with the new kernel 3.11.

Since 3.11 I no longer have karnel panics and for the first time screen brightness
is working as it should by the fn keys.
