Bug Description

whether using powered usb hub or not, same thing. using included double usb cord: no difference using extra power usb connector or not. But using signal usb connector, always the same result. data transfer rate slows and increases more than the previous version "AWUS036NHR" when using wavemon, no indication of signal strengh loss. used watching video streaming.

WORKAROUND: Install the lastest driver from Realtek.

Ok I did as you said. Note: that I normally run and operate under limited user account. To do what you asked, I logged out and logged into an administrator account and performed what you asked.

Fixxser, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11-rc4

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, please comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it and add the following tags:
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

running -v3.11-rc4. side note: gnome-panel did not come up under any user (permissions, I think). Had to start under terminal.

The AWUS036NHR did not power up. I believe there was no driver for it.

The AWUS036NH worked fine

you know I was having problems with the AWUS036NHR, not the AWUS036NH.
Also, I lost the desktop with v3.11.rc4. I installed gnome desktop 3 and I am able to navigate using v3.08 kernel.
again, I had no problem with the AWUS036NH, just the AWUS036NHR.

Thanks,

Steve Janke, fair enough. Let us retask this report to focus on just the AWUS036NHR then. Hence, could you please unplug all USB devices, plug in just the AWUS036NHR, and then immediately place the following in a terminal and attach the results:

Correct. Also, I noticed the lssub log, and none of the other hubs were powered. Even though this wireless adapter has a second power connector. I don't know if it is going to be possible to program a second port to power this thing. But I think that is an ingredient that would help.

Thanks,
Steve Janke

Item 2, also when it locks up two lights blink on and off on the laptop. The hard drive light and the numlock light in unison.

I am using this system and since last post, the unity process was butchered and repaired. Would you like me to start again with kernel 3.11.0-031100rc4-generic, cause the crash, and follow the kernel opp instructions, or just send it when I can?

Thanks,
Steve Janke

everytime I run 3.11.0-031100rc4-generic, my unity breaks and I have to do a unity-reset.
as of right now, under 3.11.0-031100rc4-generic - the AWUS036NHR is not powering up. It is listed with LSSUB. It is not listed with iwconfig.
under 3.08 - the AWUS036NHR is powered and locks up when cord is removed. Two lights (harddrive & numlock) blick.
I tried the opps and no keyboard, no nothing. I have to hard power off.

Testing on the lastest daily kernel iso, the last link you gave me: the AWUS036NHR did not list AP's with only AES wireless security. Only AP's that were configured for TKIP. Also I tried to manully conect to AES secure AP, and it would not connect. perhaps same problem for bug # 1170463.

All during testing the AWUS036NHR indicator light was on continually, which is not normal operating. It should blink on and off.

So that jogged my memory. I did download and installed the lastest driver from realtek wireless for ubuntu and that made everything work, back to ubuntu version 12.04. The only thing was I could not pull the adapter cord out while computer was in ubuntu as it would freeze and lock everything up.
