Bug Description

I upgraded to Feisty from 6.10 recently.

I have been using Ubuntu since 5.10 (a great OS that happily allowed me to use my CanoScan N670U flatbed Scanner and printer).

Once I upgraded to 6.06 I lost the use of the scanner and it hasn't worked with Ubuntu since (6.06, 6.10 or 7.04). The scanner still works with Windows.

The printer stopped working once I upgraded to 7.04. I upgraded online with the Update Manager.

I eventually found that I could get the printer to work if I install it using CUPS (http://localhost:631/)

For your information I "removed" the printer, which had still showed as being installed after the upgrade, but would not work and tried to reinstall it using add "New Printer" in System > Administration > Printing

Step 1 - Using the wizard no printer is detected -so

Step 2 - Manually specified parallel port CANON and select the model and apply

Result - get "BJC-255SP ready" icon in Printers but it still would not work.

I hope the information I have provided is of some assistance.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Below is the output as per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems gathered after removing the printer and rebooting. After gathering this information I again tried to install the printer using System > Administration > Printing > Add Printer and got the same result (a "printer ready" icon that would not print)

Thanks for your bug report and your detailed debugging so far. Could you please also attach the CUPS error log? Just follow the instructions in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems (the part called »CUPS error_log«) to get the log.

Dennis,

I have attached the error log.

I deleted the printer (Used delete printer from System > Admin > Printers
and then went into CUPS and deleted from there) rebooted then tried to
install the printer using System > Admin > etc. and then created the
compressed archive attached.

I hope this helps. Please get back to me if I can be of any further
assistance.

Many thanks

Ray Clausen

You should NOT select "Parallel Port #1 (CANON)" but LPT #1 when setting up your printer.
The CANON port is a special port only used for gutenprint drivers, the BJC-255SP has no gutenprint driver.
Does it work now?

Yes, it does thanks.

"Parallell Port #1 (CANON)" seemed to be the obvious one because that is exactly what it is - a Canon connected physically to the parallel port

Why was it not picked up when the 'wizard' reads the database - has it been deleted in Feisty?

Anyhow I really appreciate your time and help Dennis.

Best Wishes
