Bug Description

While I was looking for a trouble with plymouth (5 dots progression nor fsck checkings are not displayed anymore at starting ubuntu since the upgrade from 10.04 LTS) I found these errors into the plymouth debug log file :
[ply-utils.c] ply_open_module:Could not load module "/lib/plymouth/renderers/x11.so": /lib/plymouth/renderers/x11.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
...
[./plugin.c] load_driver:drmOpen failed^M
[ply-renderer.c] ply_renderer_open:could not open rendering device for plugin /lib/plymouth/renderers/drm.so

Looking for the missing file shows that they are well available :
root:~# ls -al /lib/plymouth/renderers

Is your /usr on a separate partition from / ?

It appears that sometime between lucid and precise, the libdrm2 package regressed, and is now installing its library to /usr/lib/$arch instead of to /lib (or /lib/$arch). This means that for any system with /usr on a separate partition, plymouth will fail to start up correctly at boot time. This is probably the explanation for the problem you're seeing.

The issues with the x11.so backend are ignorable. You're not running an X server, so it's not as though this backend would be selected anyway - you should probably just remove the plymouth-x11 binary package from your system, which is not installed by default.

affects: plymouth (Ubuntu) → libdrm (Ubuntu)
Changed in libdrm (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → High
status: New → Triaged

Thanks for your answer Steve.

It's not libdrm either, you are using fglrx and it's expected the drm backend wont be used..

It may be related to this in your dmesg, so I'm going to reassign to fglrx, sorry to ping pong the bug around. Do you even get functional VT's after booting?

Robert,

DefaultPlymouth is my own Plymouth theme built from the official ubuntu-logo theme and a slightly modified to use the picture Precise_Pangolin_by_Vlad_Gerasimov.jpg converted to a png file.

Please find attached phl_plymouth.script and phl_plymouth

Regarding fglrx, I use a proprietary package from ATI as I need to use accelerated 3D which is not fully working with the open-source one unfortunately. (I built and installed a deb package from ATI fglrx_12.104)

Don't worry about ping-pong. There is no problem at all: it is perfectly understandable with such a number of interacts ;)
In any case, thanks again for your time and help guys, I appreciate.

I wonder if this message indicate that there is a real trouble or if it just display a warning for files not found.

Here an extract of the log:
