Same problem here! After enabling desktop-effects the whole screen went blank (or white), i tried reboot several times with same result. Logging with a different session does not solve the problem either...

If having access to Compiz/Beryl management application (shown as a status bar icon), try changing the window manager settings. I faced the same problem, but it worked when I changed the window manager to fallback to metacity on failure. If you dont have it yet, can find the Compiz/Beryl management application in Synaptic.

Thanks for the information, but I can´t access Compiz/Beryl management
application because after login the whole screen turns white (or blank) and
i can´t really see much.
I tried also to disable compiz in command line but with no success wither...
At this time i´m thinking reinstall ubuntu again.

Do you have this problem in Gutsy? If so I think it might be a duplicate of Bug #160264

The problem still exists. Please let me know which kind of info you need and I will try to gather it for you.
Let me start with some hardware specs.
- IBM T42 laptop
 -- Intel Pentium M 1.7 735 CPU (Dothan), 2MB L2
 -- 768MB PC2700 DDR
 -- 60GB 5600RPM
 -- Combo DVD CDRW station
 -- 15" TFT, SXGA (1400x1050)
 -- Ati Mobility Radeon 9600 64MB DDR
 -- 802.11G WLAN
 -- Gigabit ethernet adapter
 -- 56k6 modem
 -- 2x PCMCIA Type II
 -- 2x USB2.0
 -- S-Video
Then my software specs:
- Latest ubuntu beta for 8.04 with all updates in place.
- Official AMD/ATI linux drivers from the standard repositories

Then I can say that everything does work when working with 1 kernel version lower. Might it be a compatibility issue between the kernel and the driver?

I have this problem with my Radeon 9800 Pro on Hardy. White screen when I enable compiz - only the cursor is shown. This is a problem both with radeon and fglrx drivers.

For me this is a regression. Compiz worked fine - even on the LiveCD and was auto-enabled by default on Gutsy. Now compiz is disabled by default, and when I enabled it I get the WSOD!
