Bug Description

Seems similar to Bug #103050 except that I did not start with nvidia-glx-new, but with nvidia-glx.

Simply put, if I use any setting other than vesa in xorg.conf, it dies. By that I mean, Kubuntu 7.04 goes through the boot routine, flashes to black screen then the Kubuntu startup screen with a black status bar, then black screen with blinking cursor.

I have tried nvidia-glx, nvidia-glx-new, and the driver (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.09-pkg1) from nvidia, I have lodged a bug report there too.

The machine is currently out of action, so I do not have immediate access to logs.

This is a new install on an ASUS F3S laptop, with used the Kubuntu Alternative CD as there were issues with the desktop one.

I'm not surprised the shipped binary drivers didn't work with your card. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia#head-7f830fe17ae6da7c546decbb10c32ff61471258e about which cards are supported by the NVIDIA binary driver shipped by Ubuntu. Assuming you followed the instructions on http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=72490 with regard to DISABLED_MODULES I'd be surprised if the 100.14.09 driver didn't work (however bugs.launchpad.net is the wrong place to report problems arising from using non Ubuntu repository drivers you may get a better/faster response using one of the methods listed on http://www.ubuntu.com/support/communitysupport ). Assuming you can get the 100.14.09 driver going this turns sounds like a similar issue to Bug #112483 .

Its ok - given up now as nvidia say to report it to ubuntu, you say report it to them I have, no joy, so... I will use vesa until an update, may or may not come along...

Cheers

Wow. The only way you're going to get that card going with binary drivers is by using drivers newer than the ones that ship with Ubuntu Feisty (and just so you know Ubuntu won't be packaging newer binary drivers than they are at the moment until Gusty comes out in October). I'm somewhat shocked that NVIDIA have passed the buck in this fashion but I guess they are fed up of being inundated with problems regarding using their binary driver pkg on Ubuntu.

As a one off, if you file a support query over at http://answers.launchpad.net/ please post a link to it in this bug report and I'll follow it and see if I can help you get the newer drivers going (and I'll warn you about the various pitfalls too). I estimate it will take about 1.5 weeks though before there is success or we wind up having to give up though. Let me know what you want to do...

Brilliant Sitsofe, I will do what I can to assist.

The main reason I brought it to Ubuntu's attention was to help with the compatibility issues.

And for the record, think what you all are doing is inspirational.

My preferred option is to get it into the Ubuntu list.

I have posted a questoin here:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/814

While doing that, I gained some ideas I will try out, if they work I will follow ITIL processes and post my results there & let you know so you can add to your knowledgebase.

Cheers

Gerard
