Bug Description

I have XP and Ubuntu Feisty Fawn 7.04 installed in my PC. In XP I can burn discs without issues, but Ubuntu has problems. I tried burning music CD's with Amarok, Gnome Baker, the built-in burn utility, and a couple of others with bad results. Each program prepares the files to write to the disc, and as soon as any of the programs get to the "preparing disc for recording" part, the OS comes to an almost complete halt. The programs become non responsive, the mouse moves at about one frame per 30 seconds, and the LED light on the disc drive doesn't blink.

I tried the cdrecord command, and I got a repetitive output message of "resid: 64512" and a partially halted system. Again, I'm certain the hardware works because I can read and write discs with XP, but Ubuntu only allows me to read them. Any help will be appreciated.

Sounds like the correct place to go, thank you!

I have almost the same problem.
When I insert a blank CD, the system freezes after about 10 seconds. After about 5-8 minutes the system wakes up again and I can start burning (have only tested cdrdoa). The system also wakes up after about a minute if I eject the CD.

The following workaround fixes the problem:
- - -
1. Add the following to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules
  piix
  ide-disk
  ide-cd
  ide-generic

2. "sudo update-initramfs -u"

3. Reboot

... but then it only sees one of my cd/dvd-drives...

I've just got into this problem after changing mobo&processor (Core 2 Duo 4500, Abit IB9). The drive is an ATAPI-one (no SATA, HDD is on the second controller).
I've also changed my kernel from -386 to -generic one. The system is Ubuntu Gutsy (7.10).

Is there any info we could provide to help fixing this? Any debug work to do?

Doing backups now requires switching to Windows, which isn't a good thing...

The problem still exists in clean Hardy install. Can't burn and erase any discs (both CD and DVD) from Brasero and that Nautilus assistant :(

How can I debug it?

I have this problem in Rhythmbox but not in Brasero.

Is this still an issue in Intrepid? Are you sure there are no duplicates of this report?

I think you can call this fixed. I just got a new computer and it's not a problem anymore (UBUNTU 8.04) =P
